Large electrical connector on transmission on shift linkage.

Last Saturday while I was underneath my '85 300D checking out my flex discs, I noticed the transmission had some sort of electrical connector on the shift linkage. I've never seen anything in the CDFSM about it and I've always been under the assumption that there were no electrical controls on the transmission. Maybe it has something to do with the CA emissions that are on the car. I do remember having some shifting problems when I changed the fuse that's behind the glove box to get the tachometer working and the problem went away after I removed the fuse.
Anyone have any idea as what it might be for?
