I've never heard of an '89 300D, save maybe for Europe. A non-turbo six cylinder should have about 107 bhp. A turbo version should have about 148 bhp.
Torque for the turbo is 201 lb/ft at 2400 whereas your 300D 2.5 has 165 lb/ft.
Most likely, it was an '87 model if you live in the US.
For arguing the torque vs hp wars, you need only look to the E320 CDI. 0-60 in 6.5 secs with only 201 hp and 3835 lbs to haul.
