No, the reason I found out my a/c wasn't working in the winter is that my car was shudderring at idle. I thought of other reasons for causing this other than the a/c compressor. Shortly after came the screaching and eventual breakage of the a/c belt caused by the stress from a seized compressor. Once the belt blew, the engine smoothed out due to it not having to work so hard turning the compressor pulley.
In a nutshell, the compressor was toast. Not sure if this was the cause or result of another failure. I do know that when I took it into the shop it had completely leaked all r-12.
The a/c blew nice and cold last summer and early fall, so I believe the leak was maybe sudden and not gradual. The compressor was replaced about 5 years ago as well as the other componants as I gathered from record history.
Could the expansion valve leak have caused the compressor failure or would it be more of vice-versa?
