My parents have something like a 250 gallon tank in the ground that was used mostly for just having a convenient supply of gasolene. There was never much of anything in the way of a discount, but delivery was free. They typically would swing by whenever convenient to combine clients on a single run.
This was so long ago that the fuel companies provided the tank and pump for free - I don't think that happens very much now.
I remember as a child helping to dig the hole ourselves to save money on the installation. Where I grew up you hit bedrock at three feet down. Lots of chipping with an iron bar.
I think 250 gallons of gasolene would easily last 5 years or longer in underground storage. Diesel would probably last 15-20 years. I know directly about the gasolene storage lasting 5+ years underground, not really sure about diesel storage though.
Underground storage is far superior to aboveground storage with respect to the length of time you can store the fuel.
