Yes, this job can be done without special MB tools. A press will be required(Local machine shop). Boostnbenz has done 'em and I have also. Not that bad but requires some ingenuity. I did mine a little differently than Boostn', but he has excellent instructions posted, I don't.
My axles had about 350K on them...fresh grease/oil ,paint, new boots and swapped sides on the car when I put them back to even out the wear. Works great, try it.
