The point is to get it so that the Nav system is giving an spoken direction. How you do this is up to you. When the nav is giving a spoken direction, ie "continue to follow the road" or "Turn left in 500 feet", (the actual command being given doesn't matter) THAT is when you adjust the volume. The button I spoke of before ("repeat" or whatever that button says) just makes it easier to anticipate when a command will be given, as it is used to repeat the last spoken command.
