Mel,

No, the MB "special sealant" isn't necessary when replacing the camshaft seals. I used a thin weight oil when re-incerting the new camshaft seals for ease of propper fittement. DO NOT use grease on the inner "swearls" because it will compromise the sealing properties.

I attempted to replace the camshaft seals without removing the upper timing covers, but due to the heat and age the seals were tightly affixed. Fearing I would scratch and damage the area while attempting to remove the seals, I choose the path of removing the upper covers. I will list both procedure below.

Replacing Camshaft seal with upper timing chain cover removed.

* Left front cover (30a): Remove cap (23) and filter (18) at reservoir (13) of power steering pump.
* Left front cover (30a): extract oil in reservoir (13) with hand pump, special tool 112 589 00 72 00.

Installation Note : Fill power steering pump and bleed.

* Left front cover: Unbolt oil line (15).

Installation Note : Replace 0-ring (14).

* Left front cover (30a): Unscrew bolts (17) (Torx E8).
* Left front cover (30a): Remove reservoir (13) with gasket (12).

Installation Note : Replace gasket (12) according to condition.

* Unplug connector of solenoid (Y49) of camshaft adjuster.
* Unbolt bracket of cover (1) or (1 a).

Installation Note: Clip ignition cable and ignition cable duct into bracket of cover (1) or (1a).

* Unbolt and remove front covers (30) and (30a).
* Clean sealing surfaces.
* Coat front covers (30) and (30a) at contact surfaces to cylinder head with sealant 002 989 47 20 10.
* Coat bolts (28) and (29) with sealant 002 989 47 20 10.
* Fit insertion sleeve (01) onto exhaust camshafts, special tool 119 589 00 14 00.
* Install and bolt on front covers (30) and (30a). Tighten to (21 Nm).
* Remainder of installation is reverse of removal procedure. Observe all installation notes and tightening specifications.
* Check leaks with engine running.

Tightening Torques:
Bolts of front covers 25 Nm
Reservoir at power steering pump (Torx E8) 9 Nm
