The kind with "wires" (the system is called "Hot Wire", or more technically "LH-SFI, which is "Luft Hotwire-sequential fuel injection) rarely go bad. The bad ones came later with "HFM-SFI" and on to todays system, which in it's basic form is called "ME" (pronounced M. E.). HFM is Hot Film Management, this is where you have the small "chip" of film which gets comtaminated and/or damaged. The only real difference between hot wire and HFM is the Mass airflow sensor design itself, but the sensors are not interchangeable.
M E uses the same design sensor as HFM, but M E has the ignition system control integrated into the engine (fuel injection) control unit.
