New(to me) steering box..

Pulled a box of an early w123 gas car, same car I got my lower seat spring from, no cluster left in it, but from the condition of the seats it had to be low mile. Looking at the front end seems to agree, it was in better shape than mine is right now.

Anyway, early box has a different pittman arm, so I left mine on the car and swapped boxes. Removing the pittman arm from my box was a real PITA. Broke my puller. Putting it back ON the "new" box was an equal PITA, it's still not seated that last 2/10th's of an inch, but surely that will not harm anything. It's not going on there unless I pull the box and put it under a press, so.

You could feel NO play with your hand on that box off the car. None. You could feel play in mine. On the car however, there is about the same amount of play, a little less maybe, but not much. There is a good deal more tightness to it overall, and it returns to center with more umph.

Overall it was a nasty bother for something I'm still not satisfied with. Stuff like this really makes me think about getting out of MB's. I looked over a guy's little 80's BMW yesterday, 4cyl, 5spd, clean as a pin, he swears 30mpg on the highway, has 200something K on it, a STEERING RACK, COMFY SEATS, amoung other things. Not a diesel, but hey. And it took $37 to fill the damn 300d up yesterday...

~sigh~
