Not to worry. The engine's been in and running for over a month. Almost 1000 miles put on it, and it runs great.
I have the service history for the 240D - it seemed to be well maintained, but the last sheet in it describes knocking noises. As far as I can tell, the mechanic bought ifrom the last owner for parts and instead resold it. I bought it from a guy that had bought the car for parts, and didn't ever get the engine. I suspect it spun a rod bearing.
