At a hardware store buy some stiff, noncorrosive wire (around 14 gauge copper) and a screen door repair kit (together you shouldnt spend over $15, probably not even $10). Bend and cut the wire to fit over the holes as the original filter would (you can see the channels where it goes in) and then cut the screen about 1/2" bigger on each side. Fold it over the wire and "sew" it to the other piece. It's cheap, it works, and if you do it well, nobody can tell.
