Well how about that, I managed to get it out. Took a small pick, wedged it to keep the ring from turning, and used a long handled screwdriver twisted againsted the pick to pry the ring off. After that, the rest of it went pretty smoothly. Hopefully all this work will have affected SOME of the petroleum products leaking out of the engine.
