No heat on floor

My 86 sdl has stopped blowing heat on the floor. I've gone through my repair manual on cd and searched the forum. It seems that I need to pull the side panel on the console to check vacuum and also look behind the radio to verify that the flap is moving. I'll check all that tomorrow. I'm wondering however what part normally fails. Any concensus on what typically fails - vacuum line, connector, etc? I'm also wondering if I'm not able to get it properly repaired, is there some way to hold the flap partially open? I've got a round trip from Philly to Pittburgh coming up and a little heat on the floor would be nice!

Thanks
Dave
