ymsin, you're part right about Audi: the four rings represent the amalgamation of 4 car manufacturers that is Audi. None of them is BMW or VW. One is Horch. I think one is NFU. Can't remember the others; I have a good book which confirms these things at home, I'll check it out tonight.
By the way, the English translation would be Bayern Engine Works. Interestingly they seem to have made early links with Pratt & Whitney.
