Question 1989 300E wiper question (URGENT)

So anyway, I just received a phone call from the little old lady....my mother....she and my father (the old man)...have been having a struggle in the old man's 1989 300E.
Traveling on the highway, the uniwiper seems to have either quit, burned out, or some type of electrical difficulty.
First, for the past month, the HIGH SPEED setting on the multi-switch has only operated the wiper VERY SLOWLY.....Second, the other day, I had my father lubricate the wiper mechanism at the "plunger" that goes in and out, with some TRI-FLOW.
Anyway, the two old folks, back in Ct. were doing some highway cruising and the wiper "stopped". I asked my mother again, and she stated there was some sort of a burning smell......I would tend to think so, as she wears 2 HEARING AIDS and has an accute sense of smell. (as well as a quick and sharp wit)......Also, previously, the wiper seemed to function correctly at BOTH the intermittent (sp?) and the SLOW settings.
As she and my elderly father continued their journey through the ICE STORM on the highway in Ct. HEAVY TRAFFIC.....They argued about what to do! .....HOW CAN THAT BE?
I sure am a stubborn SOB!...perhaps I get SOME of it from them....
According to MOM, the wiper got SLOWER, prior to STOPPING at the 12 o'clock position!
They made it back to MOM's office and decided to make a few telephone calls. I got one 170 miles away.......
Mom stated that "your (MY) stubborn father decided to NOT SHUT THE WIPER SWITCH OFF at this point! ............Silly me, here I thought that they had done what I have previously stated for YEARS.......UNSTICK the wipers from the frozen windshield BEFORE attempting to turn them on!......USE spray deicer etc.....FIRST!
So anyway, they had at least followed my "COMMAND".....However, at this point, the wiper will NOT move at all. I am under the impression that it continues to be at the 12 o'clock position.....I am NOT really sure at this point. My father (complete with his SINGLE hearing aid) made it clear to me that the LINKAGE seems to still be intact.......
I asked them to NOT attempt to deal with the fuze box etc. in the driving SLEET/ FREEZING RAIN etc. IE: FUMBLEFINGERS etc and WETNESS! They have taken my advice and reached my brother, finally...........NO one knows his wife's cell number .......
Now for the million dollar question....WIPER MOTOR? MULTI-SWITCH? FUZE? RELAY? VOODOO? HOCUS POCUS? LINKAGE?>probably not ...
Thanks in advance for any and all input!
Best wishes always,
Spo out
p.s. DAD is 86 and sharp as a tack.....works EVERY day and drives himself wherever he wants or needs to go!
