it's a dye all right... get it on your paint or windows..and you will have to use a good polish to get it off.

They claim it will make it through 500 washes.... I suspect every year or so is more likely.... I don't have enough experience... but I really like the way it blackens stuff that has faded...

nice on door handles... roof rails..window trim, bumpers, etc...
