Possible Differential Pinion Failure

Hi guys, this is my first time postig here. Here is the problem that I encountered on my car:
I kept hearing a whining noise as I accelerate so I suspected the front wheel bearings. I replaced them and installed new disk brakes and pads for good measure. The noise did not go away.
I changed the fluid for the differential and no noticable improvements. Today I jacked up the car from the rear, put the car in drive and stuck a brick on the acelerator. When I went under the car I heard the noise coming from the front part of the differential. It was howling like mad.
What do you guys think? pinion bearings? the whole differentail or both? what's one to do? is the bearing easily accessible to be replaced by a mortal or I should look for a new or rebuilt differential unit?
