You can't compare a C43 to that C36. That C36 is a '97 model, which had the tranny problems. These would have been largely sorted out in the C43. The '97 also had the head gasket problem, which is not existant in the C43's M113 V8. Plus, remember that not all cars are created equal. Many people criticize the reliability of the W210 cars, but we have two of them and both have been bulletproof.

The W202 chassis has no major issues, and the engine is the same basic engine in the E430 and S430, with minor revisions. The tranny is the familiar 722.6. I really don't think the C43 will be troublesome to maintain. By way of comparison, both of the BMWs we owned - although mroe fun to drive- gave us more problems than the W210 cars. I would buy that C43 in a heartbeat.
