check the pinion

gear for free play. i am not sure how much is allowed but if there is none, then i would not worry about it unless the noise is making you crazy...then it might be cheaper to replace it than pay the shrink!

seriously though if it is tight the noise is not dangerous.

i have read that mb rear ends are notoriously noisy. personally i dont think so but that is about all i drive.
