Never use acetone as a fuel additive unless you intend to trash your engine!
I hope this is another topic that someone posted just to start another controversy/rant.

For the rest of us forum contributers...Please don't encourage these young whippersnappers to do things to their Mercedes that will result in seriously damaging them! Sarcastic sense of humor does not convey through the written word and will likely be misunderstood by the readers.

I don't think it was started with sarcastic intent, but rather with credulous speculation.

Yea, it's almost certainly a bad idea. Of course, using gasoline for anything but a motor fuel is a pretty bad idea, and that's fine in the tank (at least on the other forum), so some nasty stuff goes in there already.

Personally, I'm grateful for Forced having done this test. While it's not quite scientifically valid (driving conditions can change), it may be enough to dissuade a newcomer from trying the same thing.

BTW- Acetone is used as nail polish remover.I am not sure how bad it is, but It can't be too bad.

I have a friend that uses acetone in his gasser van. He regularly gets an extra 100 miles per tank using just 2 ounces per fillup. When he started using acetone it took 2 or 3 tanks of fillup for results to show. Go figure.

Ohio, nearly any fuel-saver device or technique will work if the owner thinks it should. He will alter his driving habits to suit, without realizing it.

The only true test would be controlled conditions where the people doing the testing do not know whether the fuel is tainted.

I'll tell you this, I threwsomein a high compression enigne " a back in the day" and whileit didboost octane, it fried my carbs needleandseats pronto. Idont know what components in the MBz D fuel system will get it, but something will.

Toluene works better in gassers. I'd never run an aromatic like that in my diesel.

The theory is that that the acetone breaks the surface tension of the fuel allowing it to more easily ignite.

Line D is supposed to represent diesel.


It hasn't harmed anything in the short months I've used it. I have checked all my fuel lines (including the tank and vent lines) and none of them show signs of damage. The 12oz bottle of pure acetone cost me $12 and I still have 1/2 of it left.

(Obviously) DO NOT get any on your paint.

I don't recommend that anyone else do this test. It's snake oil like most every other fuel saving device and additives out there.

I run it in my Scout and it helps the mileage plus it starts and runs like an injected engine. The Scout is a gasser with a carbureator. The benefit of the acetone is reducing the surface tension an allowing for better atomization of the fuel, hence a more efficient burn. Not that much help with an injectected engine that sprays the fuel in the cylinder. The old Scout warms up about like an old Harley, but with the acetone it cranks and drives off like it had fuel injection plus an increase in mileage.

LOTS of chemicals will dissolve Styrofoam. It's not really a valid test.

Yeah, I tried that acetone stuff too.

Unfortunately, it did virtually nothing for my mileage, either. After several tanks, I stopped using it altogether.

Then I found brittle return lines, poor injector spray patterns, and many air leaks in the system. After those were remedied I could claim an increase of 22% in efficiency. My diesels now return high 20's consistently with foot-to--the-floor acceleration when traffic is clear.

That said, I did notice easier starting with the small amount of acetone I used. Plus, the idle seemed a tad smoother. Also, at WOT all wisps of black had vanished, and a barely visible whitish cloud exited the tailpipe in its place, even from a dead stop.

Regardless of that, I never saw a measurable increase in efficiency. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't make a difference for the 603. At the time of recording I was only getting about 18 - 20 mpg on winter fuel (so 1 - 2 mpg was equal to a lofty 5 - 10%, unmeasurable considering the variable fuel quality).

Currently, my SDL runs perfect (SD parked in heated garage), achieves 28 mpg WITHOUT any additives after a "diesel purge" with MMO.

Its probably a total waste of time. But it can't hurt, as my emissions are far less (especially at WOT with the ALDA removed).

I'd be a fool to use this garbage, as Forced has clearly displayed his compiled fuel statistics over many months. Thats definite proof. But I'm a fool by nature. If something ain't broken, fix it until it is....That's me.

I'm not expecting anything at all in regards to fuel economy (but would hope for improvements, perhaps in vain), although I appreciate the cleaner emissions. No other additive I've used before made my exhaust this clean.

I will try this snake oil again...I'm not expecting anything from it, but it costs almost nothing to add it to the tank, and it is in such low concentration I will not worry about the obvious implications cited here and about the 'Net. If it keeps my exhaust emissions clean; that's worth it enough for me.
