I just started filtering WVO last week by using a bunch of sock filters. After a few gallons go through, I scrape out the "gravy" that accumulates inside. I've noticed lately that the filters are taking longer to drain so it seems they're probably getting plugged up. Is there a prefered method of washing them? I don't want to have to toss them out if there's a way to clean them better.

Simple Green will probably work well. Get the concentrate in the gallon jug.

Nothing I've found works better than plain old Dawn dishwashing soap and warm water.

I tried Simply Green. It works well, but its not as cost effective as Dawn.

I'm not a certified mechanic, but I did stay at a HolidayInn Express last night.

I have two buckets of diesel that I use. I first scrape the bags out, then I let them soak in the first bucket, ring it out really good, and then let it sit in the second bucket for a while, makes them like new again. The diesel is good for a lot cleanings.

I've just brewed my first batch of biodiesel-it looks beautiful!
I've yet to finalize my filtration method. My current idea is to use disposable fryer filters for the first pass, then pump the liquid gold through a Frantz-style filter that houses toilet paper, of all things.
I don't bubblewash-I let it sit and settle for 3 weeks, then filter.
Would a sock filter be a better alternative then the fryer filters?

Regular ol' gasoline will desolve that fatty stuff almost instantly. I filter my oil through 5 micron filter bags and after about every five gallons or so I take them out to another bucket that's filled about halfway with RUG and let them soak for about five minutes and they're good to go.

I am running WVO, about 70 % with the temperature as high as it is and I have to use it up. But that WVO can really mess up filters. I am using nothing but home stuff and it seems to work well. My basic filter cloths are all about a square yard, nylon and cotton. When I filter 2 or 3 cubes of really "gooky stuff" I overlay my filter cloths with two or three lays of old tee shirts. These tee shirts really do catch the heavy stuff, and when the filter slows down I remove the top one and throw it into my turkey fryer. When I am finally done with my first run filtering I take all my cloths and put them into this turkey deep fat fryer pan and am pretty generous with Dawn dish washing soap. Then I fill that pan with water and put it on the burner and use an old toilet plunger as a manual washing machine. Bring it to a boil, take it off the burner and start adding cold water. Then with a stick I pull out one cloth at a time and rinse it out and in a few minutes I have them clean enough that my dear Wife will allow them in the washing machine. When I did this the first time, my cloths were not hemmed and they really got tied up in the washing machine. So I cut off the frayed edges and Reta put a hem on all of them. Then I do a final filter through "Levi Jeans" pants pipes. It is fast, easy and the material is very inexpensive. The car runs very well, though down a little on power it seems. Still it does 0 to 60 at 15 seconds with out the A/C on. I do my filtering in and/or over 3 of the 42 gallon garbage cans with a square top, one handle and the little wheels on the back. Works very well!

That's alot of work. I simply heat up the WVO in the original cubies. I heat it in a home made greenhouse I made out of windows someone was throwing away. a $40 electric fuel pump and a $3 fuel filter straight into the tank. When the filter starts to collapsed (after about 100 gallons) I throw it away and get a new one.
