98' E300D, glow plugs? biodiesel?
I was surfing ebay and noticed a 98 E300 turbo that has 108,000 on it.
Seller states that it needed glow plugs. Is this common for only 108,000? The car's in the NW where temps are mid (65-75 right now). Does it seem odd to you guys that the seller states glow plugs are needed under these conditions? Any experience running Biodiesel in this year car? Seller states "runs great on BD." Any other comments on the 98-99 E300 turbo would be great. Any improvements in 99? |

All diesels run great on bio.
I don't think it's odd that the car needs GPs, I think those models have an afterglow system that shortens the life of the plugs, which wear out. Perhaps the seller is just pointing out that the car needs new ones. Heck my car needs new glow plugs for that matter. Not an issue at all. In those engines however the plugs can sometimes break off in the head if not removed slowly and carefully.

The 98 and 99 are virtually identical. THe 98 has a spare and extra alloy wheel while the 99 has a steel rim spare. Also, the 99 has additional side protection besides the side air bags in the 98. I drive a 98 and love it.

1999 E 300 Turbodiesel
I love mine, after I stuck a small mint into it when I bought it with 109,000 miles. I plan to have my glow plugs redone with the onset of fall whether the car wants it or not. My spring perches (Federteller auf Deutsch) were given a clear bill of health. See the entries of others as concern rust issues. My car had fuel leak problems, and needed work done to the front end. But I also own an SLK and frankly enjoy this car just as much. The glow plug issues in this car are described on this site in full and complete detail. Happy reading.

I would be surprised if that car still had the original glow plugs, 606's eat them.
606's are also famous for having the glow plugs snap off in the head. I would insist that new glow plugs be installed prior to purchase. That way if the head has to come off to extract a broken plug you might get some $$$ out of the seller.

If you do GP, make sure you have the thing coated with Anti-sieze except for the heat tip.
