What kind of spare tanks are you using for your WVO conversions?
 

I'm trying to get ideas for what kind of extra tank I should use for my WVO conversion. I've found some marine type of tanks at some boating stores but they get expensive for the higher capacities. Also what kind of fuel lines do you guys use? I've found some adequate diameters available in polypropylene at the big box stores though I'm not sure if they'd handle warm WVO.

Look for below deck "Tempo" replacement tanks; come with sending unit for fuel gauge, fuel pickup and openings for fill & vent. Prices are reasonable (right around a hundred bucks).

I would hope that you are planning to run HIH, at least for your supply. In any case, anything less than aluminum for your main wvo fuel line would be a mistake. Try here for tubing:

I simply pump through a filter 8 gallons of WVO and 2 gallons of Kerosene. Get's me 10 gallons of fuel for $5.00

No mod's to the vehicle, I can add diesel at any time.

I use these Translucent HDPE tanks. I filter the oil into them and store the oil in them, then use them as fuel tanks.

Wow Tony, that sounds like a slick operation. Do you heat those tanks at all?

custom built 40 or so litre steel tank with 3/4 OD steel hydraulic lines going through for heat exchange. took tank to be pressure tested and it has some pinhole leaks, so it's going to cost some $$ to seal. the tank was welded for free, though, so i don't feel to bad.

I do not heat the tanks at all, but I envisage that the woodden frame I use to hold them could have copper pipes running up and down (front - back of car) and a couple of wine cask bladders used to provide thermal contact to the HDPE
containers.
The BIG advantage is that I do not have any spillages in the trunk, due to refuelling. All refuelling is done on the ground out of the car.

The black straps I have across the top of the tanks is elastic rope, but a webbing tie-down strap would probably be more secure.

Do you heat your fuel filter, lines, etc. or are you in a warm enough climate not to need that?
I love your idea, but I would need more heat to insure smooth flowing oil.

one of the lesser expensive options is the blue portable gray water/sewage tanks for trailers, RV's etc. Nice sizes, you could cut out a section for access and then screw/expoxy an aluminum plate in to cover it. Big filler cap on these things to.

anyone use a tank salvaged from a bone yard? any suggestions on cars that would have optimal dimensions (i.e. mostly square/rectangular)?

I use that exact RV tote to mix my lye and methanol for my biodiesel. Works like a charm!

Yup. I add a little bit of lye at a time and slosh 5-10 times. So, by the time all the lye is in for a typical batch, I've sloshed it a couple dozen times. Then, every 15 minutes for about an hour and a half, I slosh it five more times. My biodiesel is has a beautiful reaction and the glycerin never fails to separate within 3 weeks. Of course, just for safety's sake, I then put it through a dual-stage filtration phase (fryer filter first, then 1-2 toilet paper rolls in a Frantz filter per 35 gallon batch).
