VOC "Veggie oil confusion"
Hey y'all, I have been very seriously considering trying the veggie oil thing, but after reading and reading AND READING threads and links, I am just SO confused......I hope someone can just clear up a couple of thing for me or several of you can for that matter.
Seems that I have found everything from you have to run a small percentage of VO with diesel, to 4:1 VO and RUG, to straight VO, to if I am low and not near available diesel stop off at the all night Kroger and get a gallon of Wesson to get me to the nearest station with diesel. Then there seems to be those with elaborate heating and filtering systems to those with simple filtering systems, for the WVO that is. Then I get to the you need to have a heater in the tank and for the fuel lines. I personally kinda like the idea of the 4:1 WVO and RUG Any reccommendations or suggestions on which direction I should go? Also, once I decide to do the WVO do I need to start from an empty tank? Does this mix with diesel? I guess I just dont know enough about it to take that first step. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks!

Dawg
Dawg;
You pretty much got it covered....I spoke to Matt and thank him for helping me get going....and just hit 300 miles on WVO blend4:1 rug; I paid for 3 gallons of RUG to do this; so that's 100 MPG (of paid gas). Good luck and nice SD....

Tomorrow I am going to set out with some containers and see if I can fetch me some wvo.....I may pay a visit to harbor freight first for those containers.... I need to use up my fuel tank, I filled it a week and a half ago and I've only driven 92 miles.....so lots in there still....maybe I'll take a trip to the lake and burn off some dino....

So with a blend of WVO and RUG, one doesn't need heating or separate fuel tanks or whatever? What happens with a blend of diesel and WVO? I know it would be a problem with gelling in cold states, but here in North Californa it doesnt get much lower than 39 degrees or so.

Otherwise..... IMHO RUG and diesel along with some cetane boost and you will be fine. For extra insurance if you want do a return loop from the IP return back into the fuel line before the fuel/hand pump to heat the incoming fuel some or do a coolant heat exchanger up in the engine compartment somewhere. YOu wont have to get the stuff as hot as if you were running straight WVO. An OEM diesel fuel heater would work just fine for this though I hear they are SPENDY. Pull your injectors NOW and photograph them... measure what ever you can measure about them.. Do the same every thousand miles or so. Not for you.... for us... GINNY PIG lol.

As of yesterday I've driven ~4700 miles on 30/70 WVO/Dino + some Naptha, unmodified. It's been a "golden road" all the way. My only problem now is that I've lost my supplier- he wants to use it for his furnace, and all the other grease pits in this town let a certain hog farmer take all their oil.

The Diesel here in California WILL DROP THE WAX OUT with a veggie blend. It takes about 5 weeks. I did a test blend in a glass and looked like a little lava lamp! I tried the napth thing and it did not work here with our diesel. Bummer about your supplier If anyone NEEDS HELP Email me. It takes about 1/2 hour for me give all the info thats needed to get started on WVO. Lots of BLANKS missing on these threads!

We've been having steady 70-90 degree days here and will continue too for a while. My question is, how cold out can it be before you can't use the 4 part veg oil to 1 part RUG mixture....is there a temperature level where it'd cause a problem?

put a glass jar of your supply outside and watch it in the mornings. Do you park in a garage? Where do you park at work? How long?
