Paying for wvo

Its pretty common here in central Illinois. There's a company that comes over from E St. Louis that buys most of it. I Checked into the wvo thing a while back and found that buying the base, adding methanol, buying equipment etc. it wasn't worth fooling with. Joe

I gave up for now because that happens here too, plus the City itself collects a huge amount of it for free and uses it in their truck fleet....not fair!

However, I am back on B20, its a few cents more, but I just love how it runs on it! The 83 got 29mpg on it last fillup! wow! thats up by almost 3mpg

Plus it has that neat soy smell when burned And I like to look weird at the station filling up my FOUR cans that I use to bring an extra 15-20 gallons home.

One guy tried hard to hustle me at the backdoor of an oriental buffet. I am sure some high-volume restaurants are paid for their oil, others may be trying to hustle you. For exceptional oil and good service at a cheap price it may be worth it to pay.

Nopers. Rather run pump bio/dino @ 2.75 a gallon than go to the trouble of retrofitting a car to run on free WVO only to find out I gotta pay for it. Can you say greatly diminished return? Can you also say not worth the trouble? Screw that. Honeymoon's over on the whole WVO thing I'm afraid. Least I don't have to worry about gumming my IP up with dirty fryer oil.

Austin, did you by any chance get the name of the company who is collecting the oil? IF the company is Tallowmasters o Florida Transport, I know them well because my dad use to work for them. The reason they are paying is becasue a company by the name of Enduro Rendering, came into the picture in the late 90s and began taking their customers away. Now Florida Transport/ Tallowmasters pays their customers for their used oil to keep them as customers. Go Figure!

Well duh, everybody knew this was going to start happening sooner or later. The waste oil is a valuable commodity that up till now the recycling companies have been able to collect for a price and sell for a profit. Great work if you could get it. But now, increased competition in many parts of the company has ended the free ride. Sooner or later the ride will be over everywhere. For now, a good rule of thumb to go by is look for places as far from the "home base" of the rendering company as possible. Generally, the further they have to drive, the more they charge for taking the oil.

They usually don't pay all that much. The most I remember them paying was $6 per drum. A few years later it went to $3. Then, nothing. When I asked where the money was, they said that they should actually be charging, but decided not to. (yeah, right)

I would find out exactly what they are paying for a drum, and then, either match it, or beat it. The end result would still be less than $2.50 a gal.

Thumbs up

Larry; I am with you on that; It is still alot cheaper than Diesel at 2.55/galllon...
but I'm not ready to pay for it; I still have plenty of free sources ;One is set; and loads of others to check into...And don't tell anyone, but today I was so curious that I had to "Dive" for 10 free gallons while no one was looking...Sort of felt cool driving away with "hot" WVO....and it is nice color too, and meat free!

D.Delano; My injector pump will be fine since I am mixing with 15% RUG and Acetone, not straight WVO.

Robert in Miami; I don't recall the name but it's not that. I will check it out since was thinking of calling them...

Austin, how much driving are you doing to demand all these sources for "free" used vegetable oil?

Post Snibble

I have 1 source so far. I am looking for 1 or 2 back ups for good wvo since the one I have is a small place and doesn't use much oil each week...(I'm only at this for a couple of weeks..)
I found 2 really good sources in week 2; that use alot of oil but the owners weren't into letting me cut into what they give to their collectors....
One pays nothing to get it collected, & the other actually gets paid by the collector to let them have their oil....
I will find backups in due time....
It just takes a little creativity..

Since the city collects a vast amount of the wvo here, I don't even think I'd be able to find a viable/reliable source of it. Plus when its cold out I'm not going to be able to use it anyways. For now I am just running B20....
