How long is Biodiesel good for?
 

Does anyone know how long biodiesel is good for? I had 100 gallon delivered the other day and I am not going to be going through it very fast, maybe 20 gallons a month. Just wondering if I am going to have problems in a couple of months or not.

All diesel fuel will lose cetane over time just like gasoline will lose octane and go bad over time.
I don't see how biodiesel should be any different.

On the brighter side. I was told by my diesel fuel supplier (I use it for commercial emergency generators) just this morning that diesel additives for algea/mildew will help keep the cetane up.

If your going to store fuel for long periods of time you may want to use an additive.
There's a company near me that makes a product called diesall. It goes for $20 a quart.
Check commercial diesel suppliers in your area you should be able to find something to use.

Keep your biodiesel in an sealed airtight drum, as full as practical. This may mean decanting it into smaller containers. The less air in the container, the less oxidation of the biodiesel.
Keep it in a dark place if the containers are not light excluding (steel drums are fine), and keep it out of the heat.
Biodiesel can keep for more than 12 months under these conditions.

Biodiesel storage
 

Normally, biodiesel can be stored for up to 6 months without problem. Use the same cautions you would with dino-diesel. As you may know, you can mix it in any ratio you like; normally folks do 20% bio and 80% dino. I make my own and run 100% biodiesle in my 1995 E300D. Runs and smells great and it is much cheaper than retail fuel.

sounds like I should be okay. I don't think it will take me a year to go through 100 gallons. I too run B100. I think I am going to try to start making my own, although we'll see if I can make it through the winter in here on B100.
