Emerency post: Biodiesel pros please read.
Forum member Narwhal is in the affected hurricane area and fuel is being rationed to law enforcment only. He has 23.5 gallons of diesel in his car and would like to know how much veggie oil he can add to that.

I'm no pro, but I think if you're talking about a 617 engine, it should be able to run straight vegetable oil as long as the temperature is warm enough to stop any gelling.

I used a max of 33% Smart and Final soybean SVO to Diesel. I haven't tried any higher percentage of that. Maybe that helps

Soybean cooking oil in a 35lb/4.6gal jug is ~$13 at Costco and maybe also Sam's Club. That's ~$3/gal. I've run it in the SDL with no short-term adverse effect.
I don't know if pure VO can properly lubricate the IP. Hopefully he can safely siphon and store 15-18 gallons of what's in his tank and run a 50-75% VO blend until the situation returns to normal. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

If he can get the rear on ramps, fuel will gladly flow out through the prefilter line into a container.

The car is a 1998 or 99 E300D. So we are talking about a turbo charged 606.
Tell Narwhal our thoughts and prayers are with him and everyone down their!

If he has that much in his tank he should be near full. I would say he can run it down to 1/2 empty and top it off with oil.
I am at the beginning of my biodiesel experiments. I took 3 jars and put the following in each using diesel and filtered (4 layers of cheese cloth) WVO. 1) straight WVO 2) 1/4 WVO:3/4 diesel 3) 1/2 WVO: 1/2 diesel I boiled the WVO to get some of the water out. The diesel and oil seemed to mix homogeneously. I let them sit for a day and all was well. I then put all 3 into the fridge and brought them down to about 38 degrees F. The 2 mixes with WVO:diesel seemed to cloud slightly while the straight WVO was clear. They all seemed viscous enough to run in a car without any problems. With the weather down there he should have no problem whatsoever with running a 50:50 mix of WELL FILTERED WVO and diesel.

Tell him to run as much as he likes and to drive it like he stole it. Plenty warm down there, but definitely keep several prefilters handy. If he's worried about lubricity, just add a quart of engine oil to the tank.
Keep on keepin on cetaceous one! |

Yes that is the car he has, thanks guys and keep the posts coming I will read them to him whenever he can get a cell connection. We can say our prayers that were not in his situation, he got lucky and managed to get a tank of diesel with his pregnant wife in the passenger seat. |

He said its an absolute madhouse, looting, robberys, a brother shot his sister in the head over a bag of ice and hes in the northern part of the damage zone. I wanted to get supplies down to him but he said i'd never get back because I wouldn't be able to get gas. I did tell him if the looting did make it to his area that he'd have his own army on the way
Close your eyes and thank your god that your not there. |

Both biodiesel and vegetable oil have higher lubricity than diesel.

Next time you talk to him tell we all wish him well.
The fuel he has and some veggie oil should be enough to get him out of New Orleans isn't it. I heard they want to evacuate the whole city. Regardless he should get himself and his pregnant wife out of there. Danny
