How many miles on your fuel filter when you burn WVO?

Hi,

I'm wondering how many miles other members get between fuel filter changes, when burning diluted WVO. It seems I get around 1000 miles per filter (I change both primary and secondary at the same time)

Some filters I get less like maybe 800 miles.

I change the filters when the car doesn't want to go 65 MPH on the freeway. I've noticed that if I add some RUG, I can delay the inevitable by a few miles.

I would be interested in seeing how others filter their WVO before they put it into their tanks, especially if they get alot more miles out of their filters.

Maybe filtering better would help. Have you cut open the spin-on to see what is clogging it up?

Yeah I agree better filtering,,,

Would help. I'm simply pumping the WVO with a fuel pump through a $3.00 Fuel filter straight into the tank.

The $3.00 filter usually clogs after 25-30 Gallons, but sometimes if I don't watch out for food debris, it'll clog in the first 5 gallon cubie.

I have a Racor fuel/water seperator filter at the old house that I should maybe rig up to pump. I guess I'm asking how does everyone else filter WVO?

mespe,

You should filter your WVO thru filter bags avaialble from Greasel.com.

I have been doing that and haven't plugged an in-car filter yet.

I put a spigot in a 5 gallon bucket about 2 inches from the bottom. I pour the WVO into this bucket and let it sit a few days so the crap settles to the bottom. Then I open the spigot and let the clean WVO run into and thru the filter bag. This settling makes the filter bags last much longer. You should see the crap that settles out. I then burn off the settled crap in a wood stove to heat my garage.

Mespe;

If your filters are clogging that early, you are most likely dealing with algae problem from a 20+ yr old fuel tank, not poor wvo filtering.

I had the same issue of clogging primary after a few hundred miles . the center of it turns gunky black.....So that's from algae not bad filtering....
The WVO is a stronger solvent than diesel so now all the gunk living in the tank is coming loose into the system......
Get a biocide; that kills algae not maintains it....West Marine has plenty...
ValvTech BioGuard......

You will go through filters but eventualy it will all flush out.....

btw Clean filters with Acetone...don't buy new ones!!!

I can't say how many miles I get yet because I'm still on the same filter at 5000 miles.

Your filtering needs work. Here is what I do:

Get good oil. I get mine from a chinese place that I get from the top layer of the dumpster and from an Italian place that uses my buckets.

Let it settle for a few days and siphon off from the top.

Pour through a 1 micron bag filter into a clean container.

Draw from the container and filter again through a 10 micron Goldenrod.

That's all I do.

Good luck.

Austin85,

Its not algae in fuel systems, its fungus which is brown and can grow in the dark.. Algae is green and only grows in sunlight. I would say inside a fuel system is another place where the sun don't shine. LOL

If fungus is present in a fuel system, only a biocide such a Biobor will cure the problem.

Actually, I'm thinking it's animal fats, as I don't heat the WVO.

The pump could be jamming more particles through the filter with the pressure, and I also think it's fats. All my filters have clogged cuz of fats. You filter on a nice hot day when the fats are liquid. Temp goes down over night and they all accumulate at once in your filter the next morning. Thats my knee jerk thought.

I dump through 5 micron sock filter into 55 gal drum. Heat to 90 degrees for several days. Turn off heat. Rotory pump thru 10 micron goldenrod into car. I change filters when I think of it. There is alot of suspended water in WVO that'll drop out with some heat, if not the other kind of water (the non-suspended evil kind).

25,000 miles so far on a Racor 1000 2 micron element in a custom heated housing.

I settle the oil for a week at 120 degrees and gravity filter from a floating pickup also thru another 2 micron Racor 1000 element before putting the oil into my car's WVO tank.

It can get in there from rain, from washing out the fryer, and from cooking things with high water content. Lots to read about it on frybrid and greasecar dot com.

And how many miles (gallons) do you get to the First Racor 2 micron filter?

Because of the prolonged settling at 120F, over 500 gallons, at least with my oil source.

Triple filtering

I am running my WVO through a triple filtering setup I made in my garage. First I run the WVO from the cubbies through a Baja Funnel Fuel filter when I first put it into my 55 gallon drum - so I know there is no water and there are no particles larger than 74 microns in my drum. Then I pump via a rotary fuel pump through a primary fuel filter that cuts down to 10 microns, then through a secondary filter that cuts down to 2 microns - a Racor 75100MAX. The oil coming out of my system looks like apple juice - and since the in-line filter in my GreaseCar WVO system is a 10 micron filter, I assume (yes, I know what happens when we assume!) that I should never plug a fuel filter again!

As far as miles per filter, I don't really know. Just to be safe, I'm changing the filters when I change my engine oil.
