Just got a new WVO source...
Finally found a new, more dependable WVO source not too far from home base...
Sushi restaurant that is going to fill my 5 gallon pails direct from fryer; 20 gallons per week and call me when they are ready to pick up..... They are using 100% liquid veggie oil; not hydrogenated; and fry mostly tempura veggies and little if any meats.....They have this giant like 100gallon container of oil in the kitchen that supplier comes and fills for them from oil truck..... I have had to use about 1 1/2 tanks of Diesel while finding a new wvo source... I keep filtering barrell in the garage....btw Anyone know how to get a cat (I think) out of your garage...Some animal has been living in there for the last few nights and won't leave....every morning stuff is knocked on the floor and pails are knocked over....

CONGRATS ON THE SOURCE!
I'm getting my best stuff from a Mexican restaurant that fries its own tortilla chips in Canola oil. Some of it is honey colored, no animal fats. As far as the cat-- maybe a rat trap?

1 The animal was a possum....Found it last nite and scared itotu with a stick....! yeah
2. My old source s the sushi place wouldn't fill my buckets direct and the dumpster collectors started locking the lid up. And the chineese place was filling for me but fryed WAY too much meat, and the oil was clogging up my filters too fast...

I get oil from a place just like that, big bulk tank in the kitchen. They prefilter it, put it in the 19 liter poly drums I provided and all I have to do is pick it up and take it home, and seeing that there is no water in it I filter it through 5 micron bag filters set into the lid of a 100 liter poly drum and cold filter overnight or while out doing something else. The main tank runs B100 of my own making and the hot tank gets this vegie; works great!
http://www.mcmaster.com/ page 328. The oil is canola (rape seed) and, as biodiesel has been tested to -12C successfully in a freezer test.

Ya you do need a license ... I just got mine. $175 for the year. If you're off the radar curnelty it might be worth it to hold off until the first of the year, because even if you get it now, it expires 12/31/05. I got mine because I had a souce who agreed to hook me up with a bunch of quality oil as long as I could prove I had a license. I figure one 55 gallon drum covers the license cost and then some. It gets more tricky after 1/1/06 though. The people who've been collecting this stuff for years (renderers) don't like us coming in and taking it. Even if we do it legally, any oil we take is lost revenue for them so they've fought back now. The "pacific coast renderers association" (a lobbying group in sacramento) has sponsored AB1065 and it was passed on 10/5/05, and goes into effect on 1/1/06. Only way it impacts us is that in order to get a license to transport (that's the only license you need if it's for your own personal use) you'll have to prove that you have liability insurance of $1M on the vehicle transporting the oil. I'm sure they made the argument that that is needed so that if there's an accident that causes a large spill, this way the locality doesn't get stuck with the bill for the cleanup, or at least they have some recourse to recoup the cost from the driver's insurance company. But for people carrying <100 gallons this is crazy. Still, it's the law now. Solutions: One easy solution if you're a homeowner is to just get an umbrella policy. Probably $250/yr or so but it's the kind of thing you probably should have anyway. Another option (only option if you don't own a home) is to get a personal liability policy. I'm looking into these now. When I find a good solution I'll post here. There is a guy in Fairfield I've been working with and he's trying to get us a solution worked out with MCGraw. If that pans out I'll post it and his name and number and all that. He's talking about ~$150/yr for the personal liability policy of $1M. Actually for that small amount it seems like it's maybe not a bad idea to have that kind of coverage anyhow, regardless of this new law.

Basically... there's a guy who gets that oil today. When you step in and cut him out of the picture, that's perfectly fine, and fair competition (he was probably charging to haul it, and you're gonna take it for free, so you win). Just don't be in a place where he can hurt you easily...If all he has to do is make a phone call to hurt you... that's pretty vulnerable.

All good things have to come to an end.
http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/business/index.php?ntid=58566 When these get more popular, they will start to have contracts with restaurants and you will be in competition with the plants.

I think competition from the renderers will become a real problem for us when the renderers start collecting it for free. As long as they want the restaurants to pay them for accepting the raw material, homebrewers have a way to compete with them.

I'm not cutting out the Collector so he won't loose his business. I'm just taking some of the UCO; (about 20 gallons a week); before it gets to the dumpster...which by the way in this case doesn't get emptied often enough and the restaurant is actually giving me ...overflow.... MAtt; I just picked up my 1st pails from him today and will filter , and let it sit for a few days; before blending....should get another 10 gallons mid week...They are actually cleaning my pails before they fill them so there's no moisture in 'em. And it sounds like you have WAY too much oil..... Any news yet on your glow plug heater project??
