617 running cooler on WVO
Ever since I switched to running WVO in the '85 300D, I've noticed that the coolant temp runs a bit lower than when running dino. It usually sits at around 80C on WVO while on dino its closer to 85C. In fact this morning the gauge was struggling to get to 80C. It was running in the mid 70's. Outside temps were probably in the low 50's so it really wasn't that cold.
Has anyone else noticed their cars running on WVO are running cooler? |
Mine runs cooler, but I attribute that to the loss of heat from the coolant heated filter and the extra coolant lines running to it.

Nope, all three of my cars run the same temps on veggie or diesel.

I run a coolant fuel line heater as well. I've read that WVO doesn't have the BTU's that dino does. That may be a reason for cooler running temps but I never thought it could be that significant. I have a veg-therm that I'll be installing soon so it'll be interesting to see if that makes any difference.

I suspect that VWO simply has a lower heating value than diesel (less BTU/lb) resulting in less waste heat to the coolant system.
