4k WVO trip, first stop dallas
well i am made it to my first stop in dallas without any problems. the 300D drove great, and was supprised at how well it handled the load. got some pictures of me refueling. funny story behind it. my wife had to use the restroom so we stoped at the first place we found and it was literally just two huge liquor stores with one gas pump. we went about our business, and while starting to refuel, the owner ran out telling us not to do that on their property. we yelled back that it was vegetable oil and not GAS, and she seemed confused but told us not to do it there. we were like WTF but whatever. so we went back on the highway for one more exit, and stoped at a Conoco. Got pictures of us (me and my wife) filling up, but got another funny story.
we were watching the gas gauge and at 3/4 it was just full, like it spilled out. it was hillarious, i knew the gauge would be laggin behind me pumping, but not at 3/4 full. so i spilled about half a gallon on the pavement. not sure about the gas mileage yet, but on the next fillup i will get it super full again and then drive it to the reserve light. that should be 18 gallon and i figure my mileage that way. if anyone in california has any extra WVO i can buy then it will help me get back. i think i will only make it about 1/2 way back if i only use what i have in the trailer. i am going from tuscon to Los Angles to fresno, and then later back the same way.

Hey! You're doin' it!
You need to enlist some artists along the way to give you some graphics on the side of that trailer. "Sniff My Fumes- They're Tasty!" or something along those lines. |

I would try to be a little more discreet out in public during the refueling process. When you get stopped tell em you are hauling the oil for your families holiday get together cooking. It will be interesting to find out how it goes hauling those "unidentifed" liquids around on that trailer during these times. Good luck with the endeaver.

Are you running that straight in the main tank without heating it to 160*F before the IP??

good God, I have to wonder how efficient it is to haul your trailer and WVO around like that, but more power to you for doing it! My wife would chop my head off if I even proposed such an endeavor.

Excellent! I've got to show my wife these pictures so she'll know it's not just me. I love it when everyone else asks "Why?" ...but Yikes(!) had one of those trailers once...it got lighter as I went because things kind of fell off as it rolled along. That's a heck of a lot of weight, but at least the load lessens as you burn off fuel. Good luck and have fun!

Wow 4 drums! that quite a load. I have pulled a some inappropriate trailers with my 300sd but if your experience works out without any transmission problems or overheating with the weight of all that liquid encourages me to push the envelope more.
Pulling a 5x8 enclosed trailer full of beach toys in the summer with the AC on made for some real borderline overheating coolant temps. Pulling the same trailer with a 300lb motorcycle in it felt like the car was taking a lot of energy to stay over 65mph. Next town you have a layover in treat yourself to a nice 12volt transfer pump. Youv'e earned it. What is the valve for that goes to the small bunghole? is this for clearing oil out of the hose? I can't imagine that all of that oil won't get you across the country and back. I have dreamed of doing similar. This spring I have a goal of getting to Colorado from Tennessee and back without conventional fueling. It would take over 100gal. I love these stories. I have thought of making some sort of website that is veggieblog.com or something like that were people can share their big road trip adventures. Too many more important projects need my attention though. |

You're brave. I wouldn't run WVO in my car, I've heard it will drastically reduce engine life. Have you bumped up your oil change intervals or anything like that to counteract the accelerated wear and tear?

excluding potential injector problems and such. Doesn't petrodiesel have inferior lubricating properties? Don't engines often run quieter immediately upon switching to veg? |

I guess your comment about inferior lubrication properties refers to ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel). Our old MBs can run fine on that, our IPs are lubricated by engine oil, and not by fuel like on other diesels. So theoretically, our cars could run on sulfur free diesel fuel with no problems.
