Getting started on WVO/RUG. Need help.

I have been contemplating putting in a greasel system/dual tanks, etc, for a while. I have read about folks using WVO/RUG in the stock tank, just doing some backyard chemistry and fingers crossed. I have found some good sources for WVO, so Im ready to give it a shot. Are there some good links/sites out there about this? What do I need to get started? Any help would be most appreciated. Since most of the BBQ joints around here just throw their WVO in the dumpster, and all they fry in it is potatoes, it seems like a good start.

There's plenty of threads here but...OY here goes....
Here's a C&P from tips I'm giving DannyM now...

Good news. If they want you to give them barrels, a garbage pail when full of WVO will be pretty unstabile from all the weight. I would head over to some carwash places and ask for any used drums. YOu should be able to find a few. That's how I got my 55 gal Armour All drum. I sawed the top off and use it for stage 1 of filtering. BUT if they would be able to empty into 5 gallon pails that would be easier to transport in the trunk of your car. For that I would ask or dumpster dive after hours for the used Soy Sauce pails behind any Oriental restaurants. They have good lids that snap on and metel handles to lift easy. 6 will fit nicely in the trunk of a 300D.

Here's the next message:

"A few questions:
Do you heat your oil to dewater or filter it? I read that cold filtering is better. I have access to plastic barrels.

Do you prefilter before filtering to 5 microns?

A read one of your posts where I believe you added a fuel pump in your cars fuel line is that correct?

How easy is it to switch back to regular diesel oil?

Why buy new ones when you can get these for free??And they are definetly sturdier than anything we would buy retail. They are made to last and be reused....(The Kikkoman Soy Sauce 5 G pails.)
I don't heat it. 1st stage is I filter into open top 55gallon drum; thru a folded over 4X bed sheet.
Shape chickenwire over top to support sheet. Have it in a bowl shape; to hold 5 gallons
I let it settle ther for 4-5 days or more.
Then I use a HF rotary hand pump; with a clear tube om the exit end to pump into Stage 2; ( and also from Stage 2 into the tank on the MB."

Letting it settle for 4-5 days and then pump from the top; never the bottom 4" of WVO. That fixes the dewattering part. I don't think there's enough water in my oil anyway to matter. You can do the frying pan test...I then go to stage 2; A 35 gal. trash pail; the lid turned over; lined w/ plastic sheet; 5 micron McMasterCarr filter into the center of the lid; through a cut out hole...with the plastic sealing the lid and filter; pump from #1 into #2; and settle for 1day or more if nec. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STARTRON DIESL ADDITIVE ALWAYS!!!
I also added a 12V facet fuel pump to assist the lift pump on the IP. Big difference! You can add Diesel anytime. Mixing some WVOand diesel if necessary is OK. LIke if you're stuck with no WVO....Some say just don't do it too often. Lemme know.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. The place where I work buys restaurant grade motor/gear oil in plastic 55 gal drums (we build electric forklifts) so that shouldnt be a problem. I guess I just need to find a good place to put my system. Where do you get the 5 micron filter?

Not sure I know which ones I got, but I would call them and explain your use and ask for 5 micron filters. Like $5.00ea.
