Straight Vegetable Oil as Diesel Fuel
There has been a number of threads on this issue. There is recent increased interest on using SVO as diesel fuel now that dino is at the $3.25/gallon, and soy bean oil is available at $2.60/gallon. The issues include whether it is safe to use (mess up with the fuel injector pump, etc), what to add to the SVO, and others. These are legitimate concerns. Here is a document that looks at it, and hopefully it will help many who is taking of switching to SVO.

Also visit the Biodiesel/SVO sticky on the top of the discussion forum page. Lots of stuff to read.

Journey to Misinformation
Check out:
www.biodiesel.infopop.cc Don't use the info on Journey To Forever. Too much not-quite-right info.

That was a petty informative site, especially since I am about to make my own 2 take SVO system. I was disapointed that they didn't go into detail why a rotory pump doesn't hold up as well as a piston pump, but they did mention some things that I found interesting.
- Using VO in an IDI is much safter than a DI since the presures are lower, and atomiztion is not so much a problem. - Copper pipe in a VO system is bad because it catalyzes the fuel towards the bad side. - VO has to be heated up to 170*C to be of a similar viscosity to diesel. If you are considering doing a conversion, its a pretty good read. They are trying to sell a single tank conversion, so they want you to go with the single tank system; I am going with the two tank system, so I am more biased towards it. I like the two tank idea personally since I bought the car to take "long trips." Whats everyone elses thoughts? |

I agree with the information about JTF with this subject (among a few others...)
VO or WVO will run fine, IF you heat it. Otherwise, it will be too thick to run correctly. You will have a little less power and a little less mileage, but you will also have a little less pollution. There are a number of websites that will tell you how to run straight VO, or WVO, but the bottom line is that is will fun fine, but only if heated. you might look at http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x?a=tat or http://www.fattywagons.com for some more information. You can run a blend, like was mentioned before, and it will help with the lubrication and cost. check out the Bio part of this forum for more. |
