The Current State of Consumer Biodiesel in New Jersey

As I got interested in the possibility of using biodiesel at some point down the road (no pun intended), I started looking for information on any biodiesel available to consumers in New Jersey. Since I don't own a house, fuel storage in large containers is out of question for me, so if I will be using biodiesel, I do need it to come from a retail fuel pump and be somewhat near the place I live/work.

I found a flyer on the web about the biodiesel incentive program in NJ, mostly for commercial and government fleet, and I then decided to write an email to the contact person for the incentive, Ellen Bourbon.

Here is what she had to say about the current state of biodiesel in New Jersey:

Quote:
Hi Denis,

Right now, there are no public locations in New Jersey where you can buy biodiesel at retail. There are a number of local governments and several school districts that are currently using biodiesel, and we will be launching programs this summer with the state colleges and universities and the soybean farmers, to get them to start using biodiesel. Our office is also working with the N.J. Dept. of Environmental Protection, the N.J. Soybean Board and the Fuel Merchants Association of N.J. to promote the use of biodiesel blends, both as a vehicle fuel and as a home heating fuel. We are hopeful that we will have biodiesel available at retail in the near future.

Feel free to give me a call at 609-984-3058 if you have any other questions about biodiesel. You can also check out the National Biodiesel Board's website at www.biodiesel.org. They have quite a bit of information on biodoiesel usage throughout the country.

Thank you for your interest.

Ellen Bourbon

That has to be the nicest piece of correspondence that I've seen from a government employee for some time. Not much help, but nice.

Watch out, once Biodiesel becaomes available on a large scale, the Gummint is going to tax the you know what out of it.

And regulate it out of private hands. (added by edit)

Beings that I used to live in the Kriminals Republik of Soviet Jersey, I can attest that they will probably make it illegal to produce in your own home, and make you pay a "Diesel Tax" when you register your car.

I gave up on Jersey bashing a few years ago and decided to start liking it. Certainly made my life here easier

They are a little late, as usual, in getting government efforts together for things that other states have already implemented, but it's nice to know it's on the agenda. You have to remember that it's the state with one of the highest population densities around, and I'm sure they have a lot of different problems and red tape to deal with.

I was happy to hear they are making some efforts toward encouraging biodiesel and trying to get more places with large truck/bus fleet to switch. Perhaps it will bring the state on the map (no pun intended) with various biodiesel suppliers, and retail might be soon to follow!

Sprague Energy, one of the NorthEastern suppliers of biodiesel, told me that they are planning to open locations that serve biodiesel to NJ consumers soon.

Thats good news Deniss,
All it should take is a fuel company like Sprague Energy to offer an incentive or leverage the distribution to the filling stations in NJ. If they get some on board the rest will eventually fall into place......no one wants to be the first!
I wish the State of Massachusetts would make a move and at least make the rest stops on the Mass. Turnpike carry it. All we need is a catalyst here.... we already have a few (very few!) independent stations carrying it...

I had looked at the BioDiesel Distribution Map of the US. There are scattered locations in New England but then they stop at the New York boarder. New York is blank ....not showing any BioDiesel availability at all. Are individual states blocking its distribution? I am just curious what is involved....

Did you move to PA?

Thanks for taking the time to send out the email, Denis. I'm still hoping we can get cheap vegetable oil at Sam's Club. Bio Diesel would be better in the winter though.

Jersey Biodiesel

Taylor oil sells the stuff for $5.00/gal in 5 gal pales in Somerville. AFAIK it is the best you can do in central jersey. I keep pestering Bob Gray who distributes for World Energy about when sales might begin in NJ but have gotten nowhere. Check the biodieselnow forum in the NewYork/NewJersey section about a few other remote locations for bio.

good luck.

I was asking about biodiesel pumps for consumer retail. I know about Taylor Oil - I think the only way to get any kind of a decent price with them is to buy in very big quantities. But anyhow, I live in an apartment building, and I cannot store fuel, which is the reason why I'm looking for a pump rather than a bulk provider.
