build up in filter(WVO)

Just recently I tried running a mix of 70% wvo 30% diesel and have had a few problems. Most I have overcome but one I haven't, I've been getting for the last 10 days or so a build up black stuff in my filter. I clean it with carb clean and a day later it comes back. Any ideas what it is?

maybe its the varnish and shellac from the tank walls. I am thinking this is a one tank system and that usually happens with bio d but i have heard it happens with wvo also. just keep cleaning the filter or have a spare or three nearby.

Sounds like you have a fungus bloom in your fuel tank. Dose it big time with a fungicide and get lots of filters. Better yet, drain and drop the tank, remove the fuel sending unit, clean the tank with bleach, flush out the fuel lines to the engine with clean Diesel, replace the tank and start over. To get the last little bit of water out of the tank, tip it to a corner, tie a shop rag onto a coat hanger, and swab the remaining water out. This is NOT a big project. I just did mine in a 115 D in a couple of hours.

I also have been running a mix of 70% wvo and 30% diesel.I also add 1 quart RUG per 5 gal of wvo.I have not seen any problems at all.I just turned 6000 miles on the same filters and they were used when I got the car. I also use a cetane boost. Could it be algae in your filters? I have also added homemade bio and have seen no problems with my filters. What other problems have you seen that you have overcome? One other question-what kind of oil are you filtering and to what micron do you filter to?

I've had the hardest time finding fungicide in Portland... I've hit up several marine shops and have received many funny looks but have yet to find fungicide.

You'd have to think fungicide is just a common chemical.

Kinda like water remover for gasolene is essentially just alcohol.

I'm surprised, every marine shop I get to in maryland had startron and/or biobor. I hate to reccomend these ripoff artists, but have you tried West Marine?

i'm running wvo 5 gals w/ 1 qt gasoline, and a pint of powerservice diesel kleen. has fungicide in it. prolly wont help if you have a bad problem, though. close to 2000 on P.O.'s filters. got one spin on and two prefilters with the first aid case.

Mixing WVO with diesel might be making wax. mix with RUG.

Is the black stuff gooey, or are they solids?

Use Starbrite Startron Enzyme fuel treatment. It will be gone in one tank full.

A 15/85 RUG blend is much better blend than a 30/70 diesel blend & cost half as much!

The black stuff looks like very small particles about the size of fine sand. IT looks gritty. I have been using nylon to filter the oil but i'm not sure how many micron. Allthough it looks to be about the same as in my pre filter which I believe is 5 micron. In addition the first batch or wvo I made was crappy oil that wasn't filtered nearly enough. I learned pretty quick that it was important to filter properly.
