build a sucker

to collect oil- i use a old 100 lb propane tank with 1 1/4 flange bolted to the bottom, 2 valves and 25' of suction hose from northern.the hose was $25and the rest might have beeen about the same. i used a comppressor out of a window A/C unit- pulls down 26+" vacuum in 5-7 minutes, then drive to dumpster and less than 2 minutes i get 25 gal oil. and it is totally silent. i collect out of my own barrels, so no worries, but it is nice to be silent. use compressor to push air in to tank, and empty it out. the bigger the hose, the faster. i used it in early spring and it will suck peanut butter style grease no problem.

Bill,

I use a rubber vane pump like a Jabsco. Mine is a very old Loren Simer pump that is driven by an equally old washing machine motor. It will, as they say, suck the chrome off a trailer hitch.

I have two hand operated drum pumps but the vane pump works so well I never use them any more. One is rotary and one is a back and forth type. I converted the rotary one to be driven off a 1/2 in. drill motor. It reminds me of a girl I used to date once, cause once you turn her on she really puts out.

Send me $60 and I will send you the pump and the drill drive adaptor (not the 1/2 in. drill motor). If you don't have a 1/2 in. drill motor the crank handle will work but very quickly you will know just about as much about hand cranking an oil pump as you want to know. This pump costs over $100 new. It is definately not a Harbor Freight type. It is a Tuthill series 100.

It also has a large spin on type fuel filter if you want it. The problem with the filter is that you can't clean them. Once you have cleaned your oil you could use the filter for the last pump between the drum and your car.

Let me know if you are interested.

Kip,

I am going to try one of those $10 drill pumps like someone mentioned previously. I just hate to sink any more $ into a pump.

Thanks for the offer. Wish I would've bought your pump in the beginning. I will keep you in mind in case the drill pump doesn't work out.

I guess I'm too far into the WVO to back out now. I do have almost 55 gallons filtered and have been running the car on WVO for a month now.

I need to take my tank screen out and clean it but the screen was so stopped up the fuel would only trickle out so I put an air hose to the fuel line at the tank and blew back through it. Now I have a full flow again but I'm sure it'll be only temporary. Once I get the fuel low in the tank I'll remove the screen and properly clean it. Amazing thing though...the fuel was barely coming out but the car ran great until the rpms were almost topped out, at which point I could feel a slight loss of power. That tells me the 240's need a minimal amount of fuel in order to run properly. A very minimal amount!

Cheers,

Bill

Harbor Freight pump is cr@ppy

I used the 12V Harbor freight pump until the rubber impeller gave out, as did my patience in trying to fix it. Basically, a losing proposition.

so I switched to a gutted 60 gallon water tank and fridge compressor. Works great and costs about $40 for everything, if you find junk tank and compressor - not hard.

Sounds like a lot to lug to the collection site. I need light and simple to collect.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill,

When I ran French fry oil in my Chevy Diesel truck I found that it plugged all the filters. I ultimately had to overhaul the injection pump because it plugged the pump's inlet screen. I have given up on the bio-Diesel until I move into my new house and can set up a washing unit. Even here in hot S. Texas it seems that the fat in the oil congeals onto the screens.

Kip,

I am running the WVO blend and not bio. The car ['83 240] runs great on it....quiet/smooth, just as peppy with the blend as diesel, etc. I keep my fat at a minium by collecting off the top of the barrel [at the collection site] and then allowing to settle in my barrel here for a week or sometimes 2 weeks. Tank screen is the only problem I've had with the car. I was told this would happen after a couple tanks and, sure enough, it did.

If I could only get my collection pump issue straightened out......

Cheers,

Bill
