85 190D suitability for WVO conversion
 

Hi,

I may be going to look at an '85 190D. It's a bit of a drive so I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find answers for with a search. The only 190D that I have ever looked under the hood of was an 87 turbo a few years ago.

Is the engine iron block/iron head like the W123?

Is there enough room under the hood for a large WVO fuel filter? (preferably behind the driver headlamp)

Any other issues for WVO conversion?

I don't think 190s ever had iron heads.

If the car is equipped with ABS, it will be extremely difficult to get the filter assembly behind the driver's headlight.

The block is iron, the head is aluminum.

I can't think of any other issues with WVO conversion other than the norm...

The om 601 head is aluminum. The engine compartment isn't as "open" as a 240D but there is still alot of room on either side of the engine. It has the compartment within a compartment like the later mercedes models for sound deadening. The trunk is huge given the size of the vehicle. In my opinion, if your going to go alternative fuel it seems like the best option given the excellent mileage these cars already get on a gallon of diesel.

Now that my wvo is finally 'finished'...I see no reason you have to put the filter in the engine compartment.
My next mb conversion will have the vo filter mounted on the vo tank in the trunk.

I am a little spoiled. I have electric injector line heaters, FPHE, coolant and electricly heated filter with Racor 1000 element under the hood with HIH to the trunk and a heated fuel pickup. I can switch over to WVO in under 2 miles even in the winter. I want to get the same performance on my next conversion too.

I don't think filter in the trunk will affect switchover times.

What temps are you getting?
I have 6 feet of HIH, FPHE, electric wrap of racor filter and I am getting 160 to 190F before the IP depending on how hard my motor is working.

Just curious, are you looking at the one in Charleston, SC?
