Off subject but. . .

Does anyone know if SVO needs to be filtered before it goes into the tank? Silly question, I know but I fiure that it does not need to be filtered. I want to check with you all first.

When diesel was more expensive then Soybean oil from Costco, I know a gentleman that poured the SVO straight into his tank, no filtering. Personally I think it's a little risky (not alot risky), but that's why the car has filters. The difference between "Virgin" SVO and unfiltered WVO is considerable. I would imagine that it would take quite a few 5 gallon containers of SVO to clog a filter, as SVO should be pretty clean until it gets foos in it, then it's WVO.

i put 5 gallons of new peanut oil in my tank along with 6 gallons of diesel... i get a rough idle at a cold start but once it warms up its normal.. (i need new mounts so its just a lil shakey).. but i think that was a bad idea i think the oil and the diesel did the whole wax thing and are clogging my fuel filter.ill change the filter when i put fresh fuel in thursday

We go to Sam's Club every week. On the way, I check the price of diesel. When I get to Sam's I check the price of SVO. If I need fuel, I will buy which ever is cheaper. I havn't used SVO lately as it has been 10 to 15 cents more. Last summer I used probably 30 gal of SVO, poured in with no filtering. Never had any problems with it. Strange thing about my 91 300d, nothing seems to make any difference in the way it sounds or the way it runs. Others have said that b20 or VO makes their cars quiet. Maybe it has something to do with the 303,000 miles on it. Probably the price of VO will drop when the price of diesel drops as shipping will be less. People don't realize the price of fuel affects the price of goods more than anything else. Did you ever think that when the price of diesel goes up, the price of diesel goes up because the price of diesel went up. And sinse the price of diesel went up, the price of gas goes up also. If you can understand what I just wrote you are as wacko as I am.

OK, I'm a Wacko then, but that was funny as hell!
Hey Mespe, thanks for your opinion. I think that you make sense.
Man, I am in a pickle about what to do about this MBZ I bought 6 weeks ago. It is such a solid car with very little wrong with it. 1984 300 SD, but I realize that it is too big for me and that it only gets 24 mpg (at best) on dino diesel. This is the average for this model and really not bad for a heavy, sturdy car.
BUT. . .

I want to sell it and buy a 1983-1985 300 D turbo instead, but I'm actually scared that I will not find another MBZ in such good condition.
If I hang onto the 300 SD then I'll want to have the front seats re-padded =$$. I'm finally going to start filling up on biodiesel tomorrow. This is the beginning of phase 2 of my informal study. What to do? Hang onto this larger car or sell and start the search all over again?

hang on to the larger 300SD. It has allot of niceties that the 300D just doesn't have.

And the difference in mileage between the D and SD isn't that much. The seats aren't a big deal either, if they are sagging stuff some foam under the cusion. If the Tex is bad, throw some cheap sheepskins over them.

yeah, keep it

at least until you find a PERFECT D, really the SD's are very nice. I understand that pool noodles make great padding for the seats.
I love my SD, the ride is so much better than the D I own. but then again, it is 4 years newer...
Enjoy the car, and keep you foot out of the go pedal if you want to get the car up to around 30mpg. I get around 28, with normal driving. you should too.

It sounds to me like you are running WVO with a stock setup, and you should explain this in your article, because if you'd spend about $300 on a proper filter you wouldn't have many of the issues you mention. The amount you are spending in replacing the secondary filters every 1,000 miles alone could pay for a decent filter. I have a coolant heated Fleetguard in mine, and I can get 7,000 miles minimum to a filter. And I don't even have to mess with prefiltering. If I'd prefilter I'd probably never have to change the filter element. Oh well, maybe your article is a good thing. The more people you scare away, the more WVO for the rest of us!
Where do you get this filter? You don't have to prefilter at all?

I'm running my 1985 300SD on Waste Veggie Oil by using a two tank system I got from GreaseCar.com

I have an on-board filtering system that warms the oil using a send and return hose off the radiator and filters down to 5 microns. It's worked great for me unless I try to filter WVO with too much water. You can identify the watery stuff by it's milky look and gravy like consistency.

What I have started doing is collecting WVO from my sources, dumping it into a steel 55 gal. drum at home & using a barrel heater to warm it up to 100 to 120 degrees to boil off the water. This also lets the particulate matter (french fries, chicken batter, etc.) sink to the bottom. Then I use a diesel pump to suck the oil from the top of the steel drum, through a 5 micron filter bag and into another 55 gal. drum. Doing this has extended the life of the WVO fuel filter in the engine compartment and I don't have to worry too much about engine performance vs. poor fuel quality.

I simply refuse to collect any oil that is "milky" I stress to my WVO suppliers NO WATER. Since they gotta pay to get rid of WVO otherwise, I've been pretty lucky.

I'm only 9 points away from getting a little pencil icon next to my user id, AND adding to the guide.
