waste motor oil fuel?
Can used motor oil be used as a blend for fuel in a diesel? If so what %?

I've run up to 75% myself after filtering down well. It ran fine with plenty of smoke, odor, and plenty of middle fingers.

Just take it to a reclamation site or an auto parts store...why risk any contaminants entering your delicate fuel injection system and release incredibly destructive pollutants to boot?

Hey,
this question has been asked many times before. May I suggest using the search button. And being that your relatively new here you may want to read the STICKY'S. Danny

david,
I use my used engine oil for fuel in concentrations up to ~10% with no noticable smoke. At the price of Diesel fuel, the used engine oil is worth $2.50 a gallon. If you take it to a waste oil collection center, its probably burned in a ship Diesel or power plant so any toxins go into the air anyway. With the sulphur content of Diesel fuel getting lower and lower, the used engine oil in the fuel helps lubricate the IP. P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 07-23-2005 at 10:06 PM. |

I know to much about how little it takes to screw up an IP. I wouldn't put old motor oil in my beater let alone my SDL! I spent over $300 to get my injectors right last year and I am not about to risk clogging the nozels to save a couple of cents on fuel.
Once I get my IP rebuilt this winter my injection system will be perfect. Only clean diesel will run through it filtered by an OE filter. An IP cost's between $600-$800 to rebuild and injectors can run anywhere from $300-$500 for a perfect set. Unless you have a 606 then IP's are like $1,500.

If you want fuel injection system lubrication, try using one of the many fuel additives available for diesel fuel. Run a search on it and you'll find lots of info on deciding which to use. As far as using spent motor oil to save money...... "It's the cheap guy who winds up paying the most." The Car Talk mantra . I've always found it to be true.

The diesel engines that do burn these oils are built for it. All of that old oil is burned by ships as bunker fuel. Bunker fuel needs to be heated to burn, also since the engines are so much larger then ours small metal particals in the oil don't really matter.
However they still cannot shut down on bunker fuel, they must switch to diesel and run the bunker fuel out of the system to shut the engine down.

Hattarasguy,
I have been running up to 10% waste engine oil for more than a year in 2 SDs. I have only replaced one in-line filter and that was after I treated one fuel system for fungus contamination. I filter the used oil before I add it to the fuel system. After it goes thru 3 filters, there can't be many particles left or they would plug the main (secondary) filter in the car. Maybe when Diesel fuel gets to $5 a gallon, you will used the used engine oil. Probably the large ship engines purge the bunker fuel for easier starting as those using WVO do in their cars when its cold. P E H |
