First tank of Biodiesel

Put in 10 gallons of B-99 along with the 1/3rd tank of regular diesel. I am thinking I should run a couple tanks 50/50 before I go with 100% Bio.

Anything I should watch for besides the filters getting clogged? Should I use Power Service when it gets colder? It doesn't get too cold here, 40's usually but at times it does freeze, if only for a few hours.

Don't know if it is my imagination but it sounds quieter already. After dinner I am going to take it out on the highway and open her up.

Change your fuel filter soon!! (after a couple tanks.)

The solvent properties of Bio will loosen up lots of crud in your tank and lines and may foul you fuel filter prematurely.

Good luck with the Bio

Ihave run 100% bio since june , I'm just over 4000mi. and no problems of filters plugging . I put a fram inline filter before the prefilter before I ran the bio. I changed the fram filter tonight and it was getting loaded up with a black goo. I thinking it might be the rubber lines starting to break down. We will be leaving on a 800mile trip to Pa. I will be changing the prefilter and the spin on before we go. I'll cut open the old filter and get back.

Yes, you'll get black particles caught in the prefilter, and goo in the secondary until you replace fuel lines. Viton is best, but some people have had good luck with OEM lines (not generic Nitrile fuel line). I was still getting the black stuff in my filter until I got a new cigar hose (OEM). Now my filters are still clean, after burning 3 full tanks of B100.

If you haven't been neglecting your fuel system and you've been using a water-dispersing fuel additive on a regular basis, then you should have no problem with biodiesel plugging up your filters. Biodiesel has higher cetane than petrodiesel so it should be quieter. I wish I could get my hands on some quality biodiesel.

At 40 degrees (assuming F not C) I wouldnt run over B40-B50 to avoid gelling.
Below freezing I would stick with B 20. Below Zero I would avoid it.

I noticed that you're in Sparks, NV - I'm in Las Vegas and I know that Haycock Petroleum is making B100, however you cannot buy it in any percent higher than B20. They are selling B5 at Sinclair stations, but you can buy B20 from ONE pump at Haycock's downtown fleet filling station with a pre-paid card from Haycock.

I'm using it in the main fuel tank of both our cars - a 2001 VW Beetle TDI w/ GreaseCar system, and a 1991 350SD w/ GreaseCar system. No problems so far and both the cars seem to be fine with it - although we really aren't using that much since the majority of our driving is on filtered WVO.

for those of you who are not familiar with algae problems in regular diesel. that is what the black goo is. check out www.algae-x.net I'm installing a lg-200 on my wvo 84 300SD running a lovecraft 1 tank conversion in los angeles. this is great technology, you should look at the lab tests they conducted with bacteria and algae counts on fuel before and after treatment. get a 6 pack and put you reading glasses on

Well, Vegas is a 7-hour drive from here, so I'm not going to drive there just to fill up with B20. The only thing we have here in Sparks is B5 that I used to get from one filthy, private station that requires cardlocks but the fuel quality is questionable and the concentration IMO is inadequate to make it worth the higher cost.

Oops! I must have mistaken Sparks with a town closer to Vegas! Sorry! I guess I need to brush up on my Nevada geography!

I'm hoping they will start selling B20 (or HIGHER!) at the Sinclair stations sometime soon - it's kind of a drag to go downtown to buy fuel. It's not the greatest neighborhood and my wife doesn't really enjoy being there! Anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed that Haycock will start selling higher percentages sometime soon.

There's only one Sparks in Nevada (right next to Reno). In fact I don't think it's even possible to have more than one town or city of the same name in the same state!

I'm sorry - please don't be offended. I wasn't intending to be some kind of Vegas snob or anything. I just haven't been up north in NV much. I went to Reno once to play the UNR Jazz Festival, but other than that I have spent all my time down here in southern NV.

I do hope you can find some good Biodiesel up there, though. I had to search pretty hard to find the B20 down here - and it's only available at ONE pump in the whole valley!! I think you're right about the B5 - not enough bio to do much good!

True, but changing it just for the fun of it is not really a good plan. Keep a couple of spares in the trunk. Make sure you have to tools you need to do the fuel filter change handy. Keep a couple of quarts of diesel in the trunk also. Use them to fill the filters with when you change them (takes about a pint I think). I would suggest transmission fluid but that red dye thing could prove to be a $$ pain.

Go to Westmarine and buy some Startron fuel tank cleaner. Add 1oz for every 4 gallons. Keep doing it until you run out of Startron. For a while there I was burning through a filter every 500 miles. The Startron really helped, or maybe the tank is finally clean.

Part of my problem is that my in tank screen is probably crapped up. Someday I'll change it.

Heh, ya watch out for power loss on anything above 50/50! 'Specially ina NA. It should be quieter after the first turn (slosh it all around in tank).

No worries, I'm not offended at all. A good way to find biodiesel stations is by checking the retailer list for your state on www.biodiesel.org. That's how I initially found the local station with B5. I wouldn't mind using B5 if I could pay with a credit card or cash for it on the spot, the quality was consistent and if it was priced competitively with petrodiesel. Unfortunately, none of these are true in my area, but hopefully we'll get something better in the near future.
