I have seen alot of people on this board putting alot of different things in their fuel. What do you add and why?

I don't use additives anymore. I did some tests and found there was no benefit MPGwise, and it didn't make my car run any better. People will tell you ULSD is gonna destroy your car's fuel system and that's why you ought to add additives. They are just uneducated about it. Lubricants are already added to the fuel before it reaches the pump, so you don't need additives for that reason.
Sometimes, a water dispering additive, Biocide additive, or anti-gel additive may be needed, but that's only when you've got water in the fuel, cold weather, or a fungus attack in the fuel tank. Sometimes, an additive can cure rough running, but once it starts to run good again, you can stop using it.

Biodiesel. Renewable, clean, domestic, best performance.

I use Schaeffer's SoyShield. It is a soy biodiesel-based product.
I used it for years in my TDI and gained over 2mpg vs no additive. I just finished my first full tank on it in the 300SD. Obviously too early for a verdict, but that first tank with Soyshield gave my highest mileage to date (32.3mpg) and was 5% over my average of 30.8mpg. Driving conditions were typical, fuel from the same vendor, etc. Tim

Me too!!
Quiets and smoothes the engine, lubricates better, smells better, supports US farmers, and it burns cleaner.

I use PowerService grey bottle in winter to help with cetane, putting as much in my favor as I can. Also use a bit of acetone. Bio is fine, if you change out your rubber parts, and don't mind routinely replacing your primer pump, and really keep everything cleaned up.

My 99 likes a splash of Redline 85 or as little as 1% Biodiesel per tank.
Quiets its idle even more.

I use Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and fuel system additive because when added, my engine idle speeded up 200 RPM. This means it is reducing friction and it is helping lubricate my valve seats! Yes, I too use biodiesel and lucas will also help me keep my fuel system clean and free of water, funguses and fuel cooties! I don't regret adding this, performance went up and fuel economy improved about 2.3 MPG!

I use an additive that only boosts the cetane number of the fuel.
8+ CETANE IMPROVER Fuel PowerIncrease Cetane - Increase Efficiency Diesel engines function on the principle of Auto Ignition. The range of temperatures varies from 410ºF to over 1040ºF, this wide range is due to lower cetane numbers. 8 Plus Cetane Improver will raise the cetane level of your fuel providing faster starting, reduced engine noise, reduced smoke and particulates, and increased power and acceleration. http://www.fppf.com/8cetaneimprover.asp |

I agree that you need some kind of cetane booster considering the crappy diesel fuel that's sold these days. It's not near the quality these engines were designed to run on.
I use PowerService. Not too much, just what it says to use. I also use Startron as a biocide and it also cleans injectors, valves, etc... Danny

I use RedLine Diesel Fuel Catalyst, same as RedLine 85+ only different label, good lubricant/cetane improver/cleaner.

Power service in the white bottle as a cetane boster.
I havn't used anything in the SD yet, your really don't seem to need an antigell in the winter around here. I know not a good idea, I am curious as to when the fuel will actualy gell, because at 0 it didn't.
