What do you consider the ASTM-6751 standards to be? Sounds like it is pretty regulated to me, provided you buy it from a vendor that meets those requirements.

Until it's a mandatory standard that all vendors are required meet to before it's distributed, there will always be a risk of bad fuel harming an otherwise healthy engine. I know the risk is fairly small but it's nowhere near as safe as #2 diesel.

Bio-diesel is way different than burning WVO/SVO

You would never know if someone had run bio-diesel in any diesel vehicle, unless the owner chooses to tell you....

The entire bus fleet in Toronto has been using biodiesel for about a year. To be accurate, I believe it's a biodiesel and dino-diesel blend. Nothing to do with WVO ......

They have encountered no mechanical issues at all. Legally they had a spat with one of the bus manufacturers, who tried to insist the warranty would be voided. Eventually that was resolved as there was no evidence of increased warranty claims with the proposed fuel.

I do NOT want to start a war here over fuels after the bombs and missiles recently regarding oil. That was not a good advert for this bulletin board. My point is simply that a lot of people are beginning to use biodiesel/dinodiesel blends with no modifications to their vehicles without apparent ill effects.

Would love to see the NOLA buses running on bioD but trying to start small with some increased awareness. As the Mardi Gras festival is a multi-millionaire dollar organization with huge amounts of investment from the local powers that be, it is a good start.

If Kern Productions is willing to make the jump then I believe others will follow. If you've seen the people who attend the post-parade balls you know that MG brings out some of the biggest and oldest money in city.

Given the investment and risks with such an operation I'm only going to be looking at fuel suppliers who can supply at ASTM standards and not homebrewers.

The other problem right now in LA is availability. There is currently only 1 b100 supplier in the entire state. I'm aware of a few investors who are looking to build a plant here, but none of it will be in time for next years parades, let alone supplying a bus fleet.

I'm hoping that there will be a commitment within the next few weeks so that a press release will come out. Kern has nothing to lose and everything to gain from such a deal, especially since the next parade is 1 year away.

Gents, I spent the majority of my adult life working and residing in NOLA (or within an hours drive of the CBD).....I have always been amused by Louisiana politics.....I have also been to a few of those Carnival Balls.....I agree that using bio-diesel in the float tractors would be a big promotional plus.....however Louisiana and the New Orleans metro area do not operate as the rest of the country does.....first you need to create some sort of slush fund for the politicians to dip into as needed.....then you will have to catch those folks who attend the balls and ride on the floats when they are sober enough to realize that you are even using diesel as opposed to gasoline,....from my personal experience those folks who belong to the Krewes are generally pretty loaded when on the float or at the ball, and in all reality could probably care less what pulls the float as long as it moves.....and any thoughts about using bio-fuel in the parade will be put off until next year.....

Don't forget Flambeau fuel........!!!!

Of Note: I attended Thanksgiving dinner in Harvey, LA.....most of my friends have changed, not just grown older, but are still in some sort of delayed PTSD or something......these folks aren't the people who have been making news....they are just the average middle to upper middle class, who took responsibility for themselves and their survival in hand, and evacuated first to Houston and than were re-evacuated to Arkansas, and other places....returned to NOLA, and went about the work of living in the "Big Easy".....most of them will not be attending any of the parades because of the present crime problems......

I agree with F I.

I don't have anything against "alternative fuels" per se, but when the word "conversion" comes up, it invarably means that the fuel system has been hacked in an effort to run mysterious unknown substances as fuel. At that point, as far as I am concerned, the value of the car is near zero.

And your opinion about converted vehicles is just that, an opinion.

Why do you think the old diesel Mercedes are getting more and more popular, and expensive ?

Because they run on biodiesel, WVO, and SVO so well.
