A bit off subject - Tractors and Biodiesel - Mardi Gras
rather than hitting up the various biodiesel/WVO forums I figured I'd go with the experts so I can have some stats/opinions in hand.
I'm discussing with the organizers of Mardi Gras here in New Orleans to run their tractors which tow all of the floats to run on biodiesel as good will gesture. They'll need to be at ease over the viability of such an operation so I'm trying to get as much information as possible. On the plus side the organizers own almost all of the towing tractors so there will be a single point of contact. Knowing that several members here have diesel tractors, I was curious if you have run them on biodiesel and have you had any problems beyond the odd fuel filter and maybe natural rubber line replacement. Thanks for the input! |
no side effects other than smoother running, better smelling, and environmentally green.
not to mention the whole carbon emission vs katrina theories. great cause man. |
You know someone at Blaine Kern??
I grew up in NOLA and rode in Carrollton once. It was a blast but i did smell diesel exhaust the whole time...among other things. Have you looked in the biodiesel forums yet? I know you said you wanted to ask the experts first ;) but they know a thing or two over there as well. Sorry, but I don't really know much about tractors :( http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums |

I check out the biodiesel.infopop from time to time and they definitely know their stuff. A bit more noise in the line there...plus I feel more at home here :D . Told my friend the riders and the crowd will probably have even bigger smiles when they smell the rolling restaurant coming down the road. |
No problems
I have had my diesel garden tractor on B100 for almost two years and haven't had any problems. A couple of the IP return lines started to melt after 18 months so I replaced them. My wife really appreciates the "no diesel stink."

David Brown 990 diesel on biofuel
I have a 1971 David Brown 990 tractor (3 litre 4 cyl UK built diesel, CAV injectors and injection pump) that has run on B2 for several years. No problems at all. Fuel lines are all good old fashioned copper pipe so no issues with soft rubber hoses! The unit has done God-knows how many hours without the head coming off ... hour meter stopped at 3,600 before I bought it 7 years ago!!
Starts more easily, less smoke, less smell........ In Peterborough County, Ontario - where my farm is - we have a flourishing co-op providing bio diesel by the drum to local farmers. Taxes on biofuel were reduced by the Ontarion government Jan 1 to encourage people to switch from dino diesel. |
In warm weather, and when I know I'll be working her hard for a long time (shredding or on the grinder) I'll run up to 50% WVO in my '78 JD 2040 (Mannheim-built, 3 cyl DI). Not a problem and smells fairly nice too.

I just had to say something here. :D From : RichC To : ForcedInduction WOW ! Do you own stock in Exxon or something ?? :wtf: First thing, nobody was talking about converting a vehicle ! Second thing, nobody was talking about WVO/SVO ! Third thing, you have not been following the prices people are paying for an old diesel vehicle. They go up, if you mention biodiesel, or conversion ! What you have is an opinion, and they are like *******s. Everyone has one, and they usually stink ! :fork_off: Undoubtedly this will illicit a response from you ForcedInduction and I do not want to hijack this thread. So start a new thread if you must. :P :argue: Personally I love the idea of the parade running on biodiesel. And I am looking forward to hearing the news people talk about it on TV. Love you all. Trudging the road of happy destiny ! RichC. :stupid: |

I understand your bashing of "conversions" like lovecraps systems and i bash them as well! But bashing biodiesel, a fuel thats all good and no evil just lowers your credibility. |

I know biodiesel can be a huge help to the economy and environment. However, until it's regulated and strict quality controls are in place, it will likely remain a niche market. |
