I don't feel it's as urgent as some do. My crusty...I mean crusty 300D rubber has biodiesel in the tank for over a year and the lines at the tank and the engine compartment aren't even weeping.

wait, you mean I put bio in my car, and now all the lines are going to leak? will the car melt to the ground? can I claim it on the insurance form? will collision coverage cover biodiesel meltdown?

No. Old fuel lines will probably leak, but new OEM lines will not. There are no o-rings to replace in the fuel system -- the fuel strainer does not seem to be vulnerable, and I've not known any Bosch IP to leak from bio -- they made them too well.

I thought if you planned on using anything over B50 you needed some sort of special fuel lines....?

Only if the fuel lines are old and due for replacement.

I replaced mine with standard fuel injection hose which has a viton lining.

Star European is a great shop; I'm sure it's poor advertising.

here is what they had to say.
brace yourself...

"Hello John,

Thank you for the interest in our what we call "Biodiesel" conversion.
I am aware that our conversion are not needed for using Biodiesel. Our conversions are helpful for usage with vegetable oil only.
By the way we do offer converted vehicles, however we offer vehicles to convert. I have however one vehicle in stock which was converted with Lovecraft kit and is running on vegetable oil. This vehicle is a 96 Mercedes Benz E300D.
The older vehicles like prior 85 Mercedes 5 cyl diesels will get new fuel lines, filter and heating devices in order to provide better oil flow. There is no particular cleaning required since the vegetable oil is more aggressive in cleaning already and requires in the beginning more often to replace the fuel filters.

Do you have any particular questions as to our service, products or vehicles?

Kind Regards
Peter

I've been to Star European in Costa Mesa. Their cars have been repainted (most of the w123s have), the wheels are repainted, and basically they get prepped for selling.

Some of the newer ones, though, aren't prepped but are sold as is. We were looking for a 300TE back then and saw their '88. The pic clearly shows no sign of any body damage but when we saw it, therein lies the rub...

Bo, who was the guy who attended to us, wasn't the most accomodating either.
