Shop Recommendation Sought - LA Area - For SVO
i have a friend who lives in LA and drives a 123 TD wagon converted to a simple single tank system by a popular shop that converts and sells vehicles. i recently started hearing stories about this type of conversion and did some research. as far as i know he hasn't had problems with the car as yet, but everything i read says that it is only a matter of time before he does.
i think he wants to keep the car and continue to run it on SVO. i have suggested that he have his car looked at by someone who can recommend a future course of action, determine if there is any permanent damage to the fuel system now, and possibly do a proper conversion. can anyone make some recommendations on shops in LA? i think he lives in the hollywood area.

I can't recommend any thing out there, But, for now, ask him to run straight diesel(bio or dino) till he get modifications done. I know he may be wanting to save money by running WVO, but buying diesel is alot cheaper than buying a new motor.

jackg,
that is an obvious and excellent suggestion. ignorant question, but the straight diesel won't do any damage because it is getting heated up?

it's fine... the conversion done thought is something I would worry about.

some bg on this: still not sure how many miles are on the car since the SVO kit was installed. a mutual friend visited my LA friend a few months back and came back telling me about driving this car and having to go to costco to get VO. i asked a few questions about the fuel system and deduced it was a single tank system. i promptly forgot about the whole thing, but noted that i had a vague idea that the single tank system was poor. then i was on here the other day and read some threads about a shop doing these conversions, read some more stuff elsewhere and realized that my friends car must be one of these cars i was reading about. so here we are. my friend is not a technical person at all, probably a typical customer of the people who do the low end conversions. to them it all sounds like a teriffic idea, and when you get in the car, it starts and drives, so all is well. i almost hate to blow the whistle by telling my friend that his car is going to get seriously harmed by running the single tank SVO. hopefully i am helping him, not being a pain in the ass.

lovecraft
Lovecraft is in Silver Lake, about 2 minutes down Sunset Blvd from Hollywood. This is where he went. That's bad news. He should switch back to diesel and see if he can have them take it out and give him his money back. Then he can take that money and put it towards a greasecar kit, or if he has some dough, a frybrid kit.
On the greasecar site, they list this place: http://www.autoaidrescue.com/ They will install greasecar kits, so they can probably look at your bud's car. They're out in Van Nuys. Here's a list of indy Benz mechanics in LA: http://www.cartalk.com/ct/mechx/find.jsp Every time I move, I find mechanics through the car talk mechanic recommendations. I've had great luck. Tell him to stop using WVO with the lovecraft "kit."
