larger filter

you will get more miles between filter changes if you add a larger aftermarket filter unit. The larger the filter area is, the longer it will take to plug up.

Wax?

Thanx again to all who replied. Tried heating the particles, and they melted indicating wax, with a few very much smaller black poarticles like soot in the melted wax.

The stuff seemed to be gradually diminishing, but got worse after adding a few gallons of Diesel fuel.

Since i use mainly vegetable oil filtered to 1 micron at about 70 degrees F, wondering where these relatively large chunks of wax are coming from.

Also, wondering if adding about 10% gasoline to the WVO would act as a biocide to prevent algae infestation.

Thanx,

ed

Properly settling out the water from WVO will reduce the problems (and prolong the life of the engine).

Also mixing the RUG with the WVO very well and at temperature above where the animal fat becomes cloudy will help keep the animal fat dissolved.

Marty - good article. But I am not convinced that 20%, let alone 30% RUG is good in a diesel. The merc manual says up to 10% I think. And they should know.

Kerosene is used to thin WVO because it is less viscous than diesel and doesn't have the potential damaging consequences of RUG.

But you posted also that WVO + Kero = Wax. Is that a fact? I've got some wax issues, but they haven't stopped me yet. Probably the FPHE and injector line heaters are getting rid of them.

I've been on the same secondary filter (took the primary out - didn't trust it not to melt since it is post FPHE) for about 6K miles now, so I think my filtering issues are improving. I use the Dieselcraft centrifuge and final filter through a big Cat diesel filter - 2um absolute.

I've used the startron and it seems to work well. Got it at Marine West (Jacksonville, florida)

RUG will work fine mixed with WVO but your engine will like the Kero better.
Kero and WVO will not jell. I think the "Old wives tale" is WVO and Diesel fuel will jell.

Rug IS NOT an effective biocide for WVO. If you suspect fungus use Startron.

I read recently that Summer diesel is actually a blend of diesel and 30% Kerosene. Winter Diesel is 50% Kerosene.

So clearly kerosene is a good viscosity reducer, and is suitable for diesel engines. Perhaps a little bit of RUG thrown in will help with cold starts and to give the ignition a bit of a kick.

Actually summer diesel should have no kerosene in it and winter MIGHT have kerosene in it but it must still be tested to meet the diesel specs. before sold.

Kero has poor lubrication properties but WVO is so much better at lubricating than diesel that a blend with kerosene or RUG will still lubricate well.

In general, RUG is a better thinner for WVO than Kerosene. It takes less and is usually cheeper.

What is a good method for mixing WVO and RUG?

the "wax" you are getting in wvo mixes is mostlikely water and animal fat. your filtration setup needs to have a heater to get all the water out. and a settle station with a siphon system to draw only the top layer of oil off.

Plastic Drums

I get my 20 and 30 Gal. plastic drums from car washes for free. I don't like the 55 Gal. drums because I have an extremely hard time moving them around whereas the 20 and 30 Gal. drums are very manageable.

the soda bottlers also have 16/18gallon containers with similar tops to the 30/55 drum as well as some with normal screw on tops and pop off tops.
I got lots, and I love it.
I agree the 55's are hard to move full.

Hmm good point. Guess I better go find a soda bottler!
