fuel filter WVO question

Seem to be going through a lot of fuel filters have been running WVO for about a month... I know it's normal to get a lot of the sludge from the tank for a while...

My question is what should that sludge look like as compared to poorly filtered wvo? It is mostly black specks, with a very small proportion of particles that look like they could be result of wvo...lighter in color etc.

Any help appreciated...

How are you filtering the WVO? It needs to be at least 5 microns.

Black specks can also be fungus growing in the tank, especially if you have any water in it.

well, I am filtering down to 5 microns before it goes in my tank... I guess I will change a few more filters and then if the problem persists, I will address this as a fungus problem

Is Kerosene suited to this? Or do I need a specific product?

Use an additive specifically made to combat fungus like Biobor.

You could also try running a tank or two of B100. When I switch to B100, I went through 3 prefilters and one main filter. They all had little black specks, like sand, and initially it clogged the first filter rather quick. Since then, no more black stuff.

Startron works slower than Biobor but it breaks up the fungus so it passes thru the filter to be burned rather than plugging the filter. I have used it in both diesel and WVO tanks.

Are you running a one tank or two tank setup? And which filter are you going through. Is is a veggie only filter or a filter for both diesel and veggie? If it's a diesel only filter and you are running biodiesel, I wouldn't worry about it just yet. It's normal for bio to break all that up. If it's a veggie only filter you probably have fungus in your veggie tank. Use some of the biocides listed above, and be prepared with several more filters.

Black gunk in your filters is not gelled veggie. It is either fungus or fuel buildup from the last 20 years. When I started running biodiesel I had black gunk in my filters, but it went a way after a while, and now they are clean all the time.

think the stock prefilter only screens down to 150 microns as is, the main down to 10 before injection. you preheating to near 170F?

The primary filter (both in the tank and before the lift pump) are only course screens to catch large debris like dirt, rocks, etc.

correction:

it is the tank screen that filters to 150 microns, and the main fuel filter to 10 microns.. but forget what the plastic prefilter is definitively.
