IMO,4 miles one way, if it's cold, is barely enough time to warm up the engine properly and may be doing more harm than a longer commute might, plus the added effort involved.
I think what other posters said is important. If you're in a climate that's warm pretty much all year, and you can have free fuel, it would be worth doing.
By the time you make the switch before shutdown if you're in a cold climate, that seems like a lot of extra effort and expense in the system.

I'll chime in:

Blend the WVO with 10% gasoline. Don't modify your vehicle at all. Filter the WVO to 5 microns.

35,000 miles on the blend without issue.

Buy 6 fuel filters when you decide to do it. 5 will clog within the first 2500 miles, and the 6th one will go 25,000 miles.

This is all first-hand information. PM me if you want more details.

The DAMN engine was MADE to run on veggie oil. How can doing so be engine abuse? As long as the oil is properly filtered and the fuel filters get changed every once in a while, it's FINE!

In all fairness, the 617 series is about as close to Rudolfs design as any recent engine I can think of. Even Forced #2 nut that he is would likely admit that if you're stranded Veggie oil will get you home in one of those things. Also, I think that Doc Z would _never_ endorse veggie oil, simply because he's not the type to second guess his engineers, nor to put Benz on the line for endorsing an unapproved fuel. Heck, in the summertime I burn upwards of 10% veg oil...

Not everything is in the owners manual.
Remember, the FUEL was named after the car, not the other way around.

Actually, fuel recommendations ARE in the owners manual(s). Guess what's not listed??

You are completely WRONG.

The 617 is about as close to Rudolf's engine as a Cessna 525 is to the Wright Flyer.

The OM61x and OM60x were designed and built by Daimler-Benz AG to use Diesel fuel, it was NOT designed or made by Rudolf Diesel in any way.
