Here my question...

Is there anyplace on the net that you guys know about that sells processed and filtered fryer oil that is ready to put into my car as opposed to doing all the filtering and stuff myself (I live in an apt, so not an option)....

Also how much is biodiesel running these days? My main goal is saving money considering Diesel prices have gone up 30-40 cents in a month!

Also can't I just buy a huge thing of Canola oil or something of that sort from costco, what type of kit would I need to buy to use this type of grocery store oil in my car?

This sounds like an option that even if I had to buy a kit would pay for itself in no time!

Let me know what you guys can help in this matter!

Thanks
Chris
Chris -
I installed two tank WVO kit from frybrid.com in my 92 300D. I'm collecting and filtering used oil and have more than I can use. Where (what city) are you? I am in Balto MD. In warm weather, you can blend clean veg oil with diesel 50:50 and use it in unmodified car. That may work for you as you are in apartment. Kevin

Could I mix say 50/50 in my tank directly? Say 10 gals of veggie oil and 10 gals of diesel? Would this cause any thickening issues?

.

I have been running straight waste veggie oil for about three years now
in the om617 Mercedes engines without any problems.

I add a thinner when it gets below 50 degrees or so.
Thinners I have used include, gas, diesel, naphthalene, turpentine,
acetone, and others.

I think the trick for me has been getting a decent quality used oil.
and making sure it is well filtered and dewatered.

I try to filter down to about 1 micron or less.
I use a centrifuge to filter that also dewaters the oil.

Lots of people keep telling me that It will destroy the engine.
But I have had no problems yet.
And I will be the first to admit to any problems, if I have them.

So far my savings in fuel have more than paid for the cars.
And I have not had to deal with the methanol and lye or potassium
and the reactors involved in biodiesel.

Just a bunch of oil spills in the garage.

There is lots of info at
http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums
I am RichC there also.

Have Fun !

The best way I have found to keep track of whether the oil is too thick
is to keep some in a container that is outside.

If the oil or the mix of oil and thinner in the container gets thick you know to add more thinner.

He is a chap off our forum, if you go to his web site it has all the details - I think he only paid £500 or thereabouts for the car

Chris- suggest you mix diesel and veg oil BEFORE it is added to tank in your car. Need to ensure that both are thoroughly mixed. Start with small batch... buy 5 gal can and 2.5 gals diesel. Top can off with clean & dewatered veg oil and shake like mad. Pour into car's tank and go for a drive. Kevin

chis, you still have not told us where you are located. if you're near someone who has oil they might even give you all the filtered oil you want if you go collect the used stuff for them.

In an indirect injection engine, just about any oils can be run with out mixing.

Will it damage or reduce the life of the engine? ......YES.

If you run a properly heated 2 tank system, and you switch fuels at the proper temperature and time, and use properly filtered AND de-watered oil, your engine will last LONGER than if run on just diesel.

If you don't do ALL of these things, you will reduce the life of your engine or outright kill it.

This is from 30 years of running waste oils in my cars.

.

How much of a decrease in engine life have you noticed running
straight wvo in the OM617 engines ???

As compared to running a two tank or straight diesel ?

Thank you
RichC

there's a guy up here in southern Maine who is selling filtered dry WVO to people who's cars he's converting. I think he's getting $1.75 per gallon right now... I'm wondering how long it's going to take for him to get shut down if he's not registered/licensed to distribute "fuel" and if he's not collecting road tax... my impression is that he's not...

You don't need to mix before putting it in the tank. They mix naturally in the tank. I know because I've drawn samples from the tank in both conditions: pre-mixed, and not-pre-mixed-after-10-minutes-of-driving. The results were roughly (as in <1% difference) the same.

You only need to pre-mix if you're using RUG and SVO, which do NOT mix naturally. However I don't recommend RUG.

The another main factor that will determine how well svo performs in your engine is your location.

What are the tempreture mins/max throughout the year where you live?

Check out:
http://www.vegoil.us/

There are links to people/companies that are selling pre-filtered WVO, generally filtered to 1 to 4 microns. May not be helpful if you're not close to any of these places, though.

I live in Southern California, and there are a few places here that have WVO "fueling stations," i.e. places you can go get yr drum filled up.

You don't usually need to premix if the temperature is warm enough and you immediately drive the vehicle for at least 10 minutes. If you pour the oil in and let it sit overnight, often you will too much oil by the pickup and have cold starting problems.

How long an engine lasts without a 2 tank system depends on the oil, how well de-watered the oil is, the ambient temperature and the engines initial condition. I have seen a couple of engines ruined in under 6 months and others last over 3 years.

The usual symptom is progressively harder starting especially in cold weather and decreased compression.

With a proper 2 tank system, I have seen less degradation of compression over time than on vehicles running diesel only.
