Will "fuel injection" hose withstand biodiesel?

2 Attachment(s)
I have been searching for a biodiesel-resistant hose material, something that's more commonly available than Viton. Recently, I ran into some stuff called "fuel injection" hose, a Goodyear product, 5/16" ID (about 7mm). It's reinforced rubber like ordinary fuel hose but contains a hard plastic liner that is intended to withstand the pressure of a (gasoline) fuel injection system. I wonder if it will work for biodiesel?

It's sold by Kragen, which is similar to Schuck's and Checker in other parts of the USA. Expensive, the hose sells for $5 a foot here in Northern California. I'm sure it can be found at a discount on line so I bought a short piece to experiment with. The inside fits Mercedes metal barbs and fuel lines and the outside uses the same clamps that regular fuel hose uses so it's an exact size replacement.

I'll try it on my '87 to replace a piece of ordinary fuel line that's starting to melt from exposure to B100 biodiesel. Anyone tried this stuff? I can't find anything posted, searched "biodiesel hose" and "Goodyear" to no avail.

I'm pretty sure that the SAE 30R9 hose is good for bio. They also have the SAE 30r10 which is rated for submersion in fuel.

These guys have some line that is much cheaper.

I'm using this parker hose on my ram. No problems so far.

Yes, if you need it now and don't want to wait or can't for it to arrive by UPS, then fuel injection hose works well and no problems so far!:D

Just ordered ten feet from Vulcan, thanks for the steer!

GoodYear has a web site and they have specs on their hoses.

Sounds like a good idea. Keep us posted on the results.

Yes, it has a lining equivalant to Viton. I've posted the specifics before:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/alternative-fuels/222309-fuel-hoses-converting-1982-300d-turbo-biodiesel.html?highlight=viton

Goodyear, Dayco GEN II, and gates fuel injection hose all have linings that will stand up to B100.

I wouldn't lump all the fuel injection hose into the biodiesel resistant catergory. The hoses with the rating SAE 30R 9 are lined with fluoroelastomer which is what viton is. Viton is Dupont's brand name for fluoroelastomer. So any hose with the rating SAE 30R 9 is biodiesel compatible. The viton lined hoses are much more durable than solid viton, and are way cheaper. Also I believe that Grease Works has the cheapest viton lined fuel injection hose you will find. Grease Works Viton lined fuel hose

They quote the 5/16 inch ID hose for US$5.50 but I can't find out how much you get. If that's per foot, it's way too much, I paid $1.59 per foot for the Parker hose I just ordered from Vulcan.

That is per foot. While I worked at Grease Works we spent a lot of time searching for the cheapest viton lined fuel hose. And you can't find it cheaper. The hose you are getting from Parker for $1.59/ft I'm willing to bet is not lined with viton. It is standard fuel injection hose. Unfortunetly viton is much more expensive then other hose no matter where you get.

The Parker hose may not be lined with Viton, as you have suggested. It's lined with something that is claimed to be biodiesel resistant. We shall see! I'll report with results when it arrives and I install it.

To meet 30R9, the hose doesn't have to be lined with Viton or similar but Dayco Gen 2 and Goodyear have been confirmed to be fluoroelastomer lined. I have found at least one 30R9 hose that was NOT fluoroelastomer lined.

The parker hose is rated SAE J1527. It's a marine hose. I've been using it for 2 years on b100. hasn't weeped a bit.

Jeremy5848 06-11-2008 05:45 PM

The Parker hose "Series 39705 Super-Flex(R) FL 5/16" ID Low Permeation Fuel Line CARB 2006 Approved C-U-06-010 Max WP 100 PSI USA 012408A" just arrived. I'll install a piece and see what happens.

The spec on this GoodYear hose claims can be used with Biodiesel:"Specific Fuel:Gasoline, ethanol extended gasoline, oxidized "sour' gas, diesel fuel, biodiesel, lubrication oil."
